so, the BigHair and I are finally giving up our stupid-phones for some smart ones.

you've probably seen us, laughing at and mocking people in restaurants and bars who spend the entire time playing with their hand-held devices instead of interacting with the people they're sitting with.

plus the morons shambling around with their faces glued to their phones, who can't be bothered to look away from the screen long enough to even cross the street.

we've given up and decided to join the zombie herd. look for us to reduce our entire existence down to keeping all our Facebook Friends updated on which aisle of the Shoppers Food Warehouse we're currently browsing.

we pick up our new soul-sucking devices tomorrow, after which we'll continue shopping for accessories. gotta get a shock-proof case plus a screen protector plus maybe extra battery, extra charging cord, yadda, etc, yadda.

next up is APPS. after installing the HBT and Beersmith mobile versions, I would like an app to use at a restaurant to calculate tips for servers.

and not just one where you input your bill amount, adjust the slider to reflect the % to give and includes a handy-dandy function to split a bill when you're out with friends. found a bazillion of those.

do you guys know of one that might have some sort of timer? one you start when you're seated, then hit a "lap" function when the various events of ordering and serving takes place, like server showing up to take your drink order, when your drinks arrive, when your food arrives.

you can set your top tip % you normally give and the longer each of those events take, the lower the % goes. with some events the % will go faster with time. like bringing drinks, that's the server's function and the longer that takes, the faster the % will drop, but how fast your food arrives is not always the server's fault. if the kitchen is slow, it shouldn't really reflect on your tip.

anyone know if that app exists?

awesome.

the BigHair was thinking the same thing.

and that clip is almost like watching this season of American Horror Story and not a movie from 1932.

I've never seen an app like that, and I'd never have thought of looking for one.

I did notice the new Android OS has a built in time/countdown function within the clock, which is handy.

They also dropped showing cell and wifi signal on color to indicate quality and rate, which is a disappointing change.

I downloaded brewtimer for timing mash and hops additions. I like the various sports apps that keep you up to date on news and plays during the game.

I think finding a timer app would be easier. I don't know anyone who has ever wanted to time various intervals at a restaurant. I'd rather be glued to my phone. ;) But honestly, look under apps that track time and probably search for "stop watch". That may do the trick.

iphone has a stopwatch with a lap feature...hit the lap button after the drinks arrive, after the food, when the check comes etc. I'd be surprised if Android phones didn't have one...

That being said...uh, wow....are you joking? This is really a thing for you?

You make fun of the guy who is updating their facebook status at the bar but you want an app that breaks down a server's performance to quantifiable milestones to generate a tip value? Pot meet kettle!!!

Enjoy your new toys!

I'm a huge fan of the Otterbox Defender cases. Have them for my Galaxy S4, wife's iPhone 5, and our iPad.

I did take the screen protector out of mine, and my wife did on hers, since the rim of the case is deep enough to protect the screen from a drop onto a flat or nearly-flat surface.

The one thing I'd say is to skip the extra battery, and just buy one of the external battery packs: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-...-Phone-Battery-Packs/zgbs/wireless/7073960011

It's great to have one of those on hand, and they're pretty cheap. I'd buy one off amazon or other online retailer though, as I'm guessing you'll get screwed on price if you try to buy it at the cellphone store...

my commie little brother also recommended the Defender (>$25), but we went with the ULAK (<$10).
