I have always used dry yeast in the past with great results. Yesterday I brewed a pale ale and the recipe called for WLP005 so I went ahead and used it. My OG was slightly below 1.050 so according to the package it was fine to toss on without a starter. I’m only about 18 hours in but I’m not seeing any activity yet. Does liquid yeast typically take longer to get going? I’m only about 9 batches in so still learning a lot. Thanks in advance.
 
It's probably fine. Dry yeast has about twice the cell count as liquid, so you will experience a longer lag time with liquid. Assuming your yeast is reasonably fresh it should be fine in that gravity, but you are getting into starter territory.

Also remember that you can't know for sure based on visual signs alone. Each strain behaves differently and may not give the same visual signals as others. Gravity readings are your best true measure. But it is still early in fermentation, so don't worry yet.
 
I use liquid yeast exclusively, specifically White Labs products, for years and as long as you pitch at the correct rate plus have the wort and yeast at the correct corresponding temperatures as per White Labs instructions it will work every time. It will start to show signs of fermentation within 24 hours usually unless you have a gasket leak in your fermenter.
