so this saturday coming up i am going to have myself another open primary, POSSIBLY two.

My first line of business is to do an IPA. Does anyone have any recipes they can suggest?

If i do have the second primary available to use, I would also like to do an amber or red ale. (depends on if i pick up a 6.5 gal carboy from a family member)

lets get some recipe suggestions there so i can get some more brew rolling this weekend!

Cheers!:tank:

Did this one last night.

OG: 1.074 FG: 1.019
Alcohol: 7.0% v/v (5.5% w/w)
Water: Used charcoal filtered water and added 2 teaspoons Burton Salts
Grain: 1 lb. 0 oz. American crystal 20L
Steep: Steep grain in a muslin bag. Start with 2 gallons of cold water in brewpot. Raise temperature to 175°F and then sparge with 1 gallon 170°F water. Then add extract and bring to a boil.
Boil: 60 minutes SG 1.123 3 gallons
8 lb. 4 oz. Light malt extract
1 lb. 5 oz. Amber malt extract
Hops: 1.0 oz. Cascade (5.8% AA, 60 min.)
2.0 oz. Perle (7.0% AA, 60 min.)
1.0 oz. Cascade (5.8% AA, 30 min.)
1.0 oz. Perle (7.0% AA, 30 min.)
.5 oz. Cascade (5.8% AA, 15 min.)
.5 oz. Perle (7.0% AA, 15 min.)
.5 oz. Cascade (aroma)
.5 oz. Perle (aroma)
Yeast: White Labs WLP002 English Ale. Made a 1 pint starter and let it work for 24 hours. Pitched at high krausen at +/- 73°F.

I put this one together yesterday, it seems to have come out pretty well. It is fermenting like crazy and is really, really floral in aroma. I think it may be a winner.
_____

Random IPA

6# Liquid Malt Extract
1# Amber Dry Malt Extract
1# 50-60L English Crystal

15g Coopers Dry Yeast

2oz 8.4% Amarillo Hop Pellets @ 60 min
1oz 9.5% Centennial Hop Pellets @ 30 min
1oz 9.5% Centennial Hop Pellets @ 5 min

3 Gallon Boil Volume
Boil time 60 min

1. Started yeast prior to boil
2. Steeped crystal @ 160 for 20min
3. Brought to rolling boil took off heat and stirred in LME
4. Brought back to boil and added 2oz Amarillo Hops
5. Take off boil and add Amber DME @ 45 min
6. Add 1oz of Centennial Hops @ 30 min
7. Add 1oz of Centennial Hops @5 min

those both sound tempting and tasty, i REALLY want to sub in some chinook hops though...i made an IPA last spring that used chinook for aroma and i really liked the outcome, although i dont want to do the same exact recipe i had done.

I make this one at least once a month. Recipe was made by accident and it has been one keg after another since. Enjoy.

Replace Magnum or Simcoe with Chinook or both.

Check out Ed's Stone IPA Clone, or Dude's Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale Clone in the recipes section. I've done both, but my SNCA clone turned out amazing. I highly reccomend it. ;)

on a side note, do beertools and beersmith allow you to work with and convert AG, PM, as well as Extract recipes?

Well if your asking does it have a majic button that you hit to convert...not that I know of.

That would be nice if it did though, I just do it , playing with the digits

Actually BeerSmith does.

Load in a recipe, choose to convert to extract, PM or AG.

Choose your previously set up equipment.

Choose what to substitute the base malt with, usually just light extract if you're steeping.

Click OK.

Extremely simple.

HEY McTarnamins, I have to pick up a few recipes to brew on Saturday as well, think I might brew this too, maybe take a few pics, compare notes/gravity. Then maybe compare taste profiles later????

Either way I think I might brew it, looks good and I have 3 batches of the same IPA in my inventory, this would be nice to mix it up.

Thanks for sharing

BTW: I will be boiling for 60, I need time to suck on a few brewskies

If you brew it for 60 minutes then knock the Warrior hops down to .65 oz or you'll be at 90 IBU or so.

We can swap a couple bottles if you brew this. I am brewing this on Saturday. I went to the LHBS today and got the grain. I am doing 30 min. based on my recipe.

Happy brewing!!!!!!

Well, my recipe differs as well. I don't know why, but I did a double decoction protien rest, got a little crazy. Had to alter the hops(warrior) due to the HBS's inventory.
And, who doesn't like honey, mmmmmmm.

Garavity was very low

Tuck,

I brewed the 30-minute IPA on saturday. It went very well. I boiled the shiza out of the wort to get rid of the DMS. I also continuous hopped the simcoe/cascade mix from 20minutes until flame out.

It's fermenting well in the basement. There is so much hops in this beer that it's going to take a couple weeks to de-green. I'm serious about sending you a bottle.

Honey sounds interesting although I doubt you taste any of it. I get wicked honey beer hangovers.

Cheers.:mug:

BRING IT!!!!:tank:

I would love to send you one as well!

What is your plan now? 2ndary? Age?

I plan to NOT use a 2ndary, instead I will leaving it in the fermenter for 3-4 weeks then age a week or two and then I just won't be able to stand it, I have to drink it.

Let's see...why don't we try to send a few bottles around the first of december or late November so we can avoid the holiday postal crash.
