With ten million cells per milliliter used by some professional brewers. How close could a homebrewer achieve this level. I'm making a 3 gallon starter and this will probably be no more than 2.5 million cells per milliliter. Even after decanting most of the liquid this will still be a large amount of yeast to place in a 6.5 gallon carboy.

Biggest I made was a gallon, but I get a mason jar full of yeast from a local brewpub pretty much whenever I need it, get to know the brewers and they'll hook you up. You'll also get to know what's coming up later, e.g. they're doing a steam beer and he gave me a heads up to see if I wanted the yeast.

If I'm brewing a high-gravity beer, I generally brew a lower-gravity beer first and pitch the HGB on the cake. You could call that a 5 gallon starter.
