Made a lager and have in my fridge in the barn. Temps here were in 60s but dropped to high 20s at night. I looked at the thermometer in fridge this morning and it was 40. How cold I too cold for lager yeast and at what temp will they die?

They could go dormant if the temp of the liquid dropped below their optimum range. They won't die though. If the fridge was 40 this morning but everything was stable at 60 yesterday (fermenter and fridge) you should be fine. It would take days for your fermenter and wort to get as cold as the surrounding air inside your fridge..
