You've poked the bear! Assuming you're here for at least a few days (all restaurants below are what I would consider moderately priced, but fucken beautiful and delicious food-- the biggest splurge is Son of a Gun, but that's only because it's my fave sitdown place/quintessential "new LA")...

BREAKFAST:
Sqirl
Cofax (the aforementioned pastrami breakfast burrito)
Sqirl again
Republique

Rinse, repeat ad infinitum...

LUNCH:
Guerrilla Tacos on Friday (10am to 2pm in front of Blacktop coffee)
Madcapra at Grand Central Market (or Tacos Tumbras, or Wexler's, or Belcampo, or...)
Guisado's
Wax Paper

DINNER:
Baroo
Gjelina
Son of a Gun
Guerrilla Tacos at night-- **** it. It's my favorite restaurant in LA, bar none. Eat as many times as it takes to try everything at least once (maybe 2 times in a week, depending on the menu).

Also around... Wonderful Thai, Korean, Peruvian, Malaysian, Japanese, Sichuan, Italian, and all kind of fusion stuffs... if any of that is more your speed. Ramen, burgers, ceviches, tacos, fried chicken, burritos, etc. ****, I'm making myself hungry.

This is amazing. Sqirl is on my list already, but most others are new to me.

You're a hospitable bunch -- it's much appreciated. Thanks for letting me momentarily hijack the thread.

I cant believe no one mentioned TrysteroCoffee !

I only take coffee recommendations from Sunset Magazine.

Old Town Pasadena all of a sudden has a ton of good restaurants with lots of options; I've been to Osawa (under new management & cooking), Fishwives (super fresh oysters & other shellfish), Lost at Sea, Bone Kettle (basically healthier and cleaner ramen alternative) and Soh Grill House (good QPR, gimmick is super powered fans to suck in all bbq smoke so one doesn't smell like grill after), multiple times in the past few months.

I don't understand how there isn't a good bar in Old Town. I miss Haven.

Two really bad fires burning right now. Had a bunch of friends get evacuated in ventura from the thomas fire.

Three fires now :(

The pictures my folks were sending me of the smoke in the SFV were pretty bad. If you havent already gotten an N95 mask I highly recommend doing so before they run out. I made that mistake up here during our recent fires and the smoke inhalation really got to me.

Seems like your area is safe for now with respect to the fires, I hope y'all remain that way. Sendin' good thoughts n ****.

cquiroga are you and yours doing OK? heard that the #creekfire evac zone became mandatory in your area and it's close enough to my parents to ask them to make a bag ready.
Thank you for your concerns. My family and I are OK. We are safely clear of the fires and the evacuation zone (for now). It was a weird, scary day with really bad air quality, school closure for my kids, and more than half of my office leaving work early to tend to their concerns with their own homes. But we made it through OK, and things were weirdly normal as I was on my way home from work for the evening. Unpredictable winds evidently began blowing another direction....

Cheers, y'all. Thank you.

Do you know how many tickets were sold?
They claimed 1,500 but I feel its way way WAY more than that as I know dozens of people going personally. These are people that don't normally go to beer fests either. It also just sold out 2 days ago lol, and they said they expanded the fest area to give people more elbow room.

Interesting. Given that it took so long, I figured it wasn't like....500 but I guess I was hoping it was closer to 1000. I also have no idea how big this space actually is.

Yeah, here's to hoping I am pleasantly surprised but knowing BA, and how much they suck, I am not holding my breath.

Its definitely a big space. I've been there for many events, parties, etc. But no clue what the actual capacity for those events were.

Think this fest was 500/1000/1500 tickets PER SESSION? Or total?

If you told me that 1500 people (half the size of FWIBF fest) was going to be in this space at one time, I'd say that's insanity and dangerous. 500 people at one time? That might not be so bad.

Yeah see that makes me nervous. Then again, I have no idea where the 1500 ticket number came from. I haven't seen anything posted about it unless I missed something.

I saw it somewhere on their stupid ******* site. Its for sure 1500 per session let me see if I can find it again.

How many tickets are sold?
Depends on the fest, but the hard limits are as follows and we'll often adjust for more elbow room.
  • Extreme: Boston = 2,500+ per session
  • Extreme: Los Angeles = 1,500 per session
  • Wood = 1,500 per session
  • (American was upwards of 5,000 per session)
  • (Belgian was 1,250 per session)
  • (Microbrew was 2,500 per session)

With Franny from the LA Brewers guild being highly involved, there is a low risk of this being on oversold **** show.

I absolutely trust Franny in all aspects of event planning. She's honestly a miracle worker!

But if it's indeed 1500 PER SESSION, it is going to be a nightmare in there. I mean, maybe they somehow modified the space... I'm just going off previous (non-beer) events I've gone to there... But that number just seems absolutely insane and honestly a little dangerous.

How was Monkish's Monocle? I'm headed up to Ventura this weekend and might stop by Monkish on my way home Sunday, thinking about grabbing the new guava version. Also, any comments on how awful Rams AND Chargers came happening simultaneously makes traffic? Would love to do HPB and Monkish but pretty concerned that's a horribly foolish plan.

I can't speak to Sunday traffic during the games in football season, bc I'm always at home watching games on Sunday. I really liked the last monkish wild ale though, so I decided to buy bottles of this even though I'm not a fan of guava in beer. Coming back from Ventura to SD, you'll probably be on the 405 anyway, so may as well stop in! Have a safe drive and a fun trip homie!

Thanks man! I generally would agree with the "not leaving home for Sunday football" but with Carson Palmer once again looking like Carson Palmer before getting hurt, my Sundays have been wide open. I'll try to grab a bottle and will plan on stopping by on my way through (hoping the 405 doesn't get shut down again). Beachwood is doing anniversary cans this weekend too, right? Any guesses on if they'll still be around Sunday?
