Hah yeah, just saw that posting when I did some research. I'll have to buy bottles of it tomorrow if it still lasts. Are their bottle releases pretty solid?

Yeah their bottles are pretty great. If you make it there, I would def recommend trying lazy susan. Really dry, clean stonefruit sour. They don't have any more to go bottles but they have some for on site consumption. Sun soaked is also quite nice. The fresh batch of wake up is an awesome coffee beer that is super fruity drinking right now. I haven't really had such a clean tasting coffee in a beer before. And I had this batch of 1UP next to beachwood citraholic and noble citra showers and it kicked both of their asses. I have drank uncontrollable both on draft and in bottles and it is very, very nice. The bottle stood its own in a tasting that included vera mae and nonna's 7.

swivel, is you Hayden?

No backlash from me as I think Uncontrollable is on par with stuff like Nonnas 7. Beachwood still reigns supreme for hoppy/coffee beers in LA/OC. Noble's Tickles, I <3 It and certain Showers beers give Beachwood a run for their money in terms of hops. Once HPB starts making IPAs along the lines of fresh 1UP...maybe that will change. This new batch of Wake Up isn't as dry as the original although nice....but the last bottle of Griffith I popped tasted infected. Side by Side with a year+ old bottle of Tovarish, there was no comparison.

yup yup its me. who is this?

Dave, I met you a share at Greg's 2-3 weeks ago.

****, how am I supposed to turn down bottles with a bold statement like that?

I really hate hype, but when I first had it on draft, I immediately thought of Sante's less sour BA saison offerings.

Also dislike the hype machine surrounding beer. I even told myself I wouldn't hype HPB on the internet, exactly like I am doing right now, because I figured they would blow up faster than I wanted them to without my little voice crying gold. But for whatever reason it stings me a bit that others don't seem to think the same. In the end, we can all like different styles and iterations of beer and if HPB's beers are not your thing, thats fine but imo HPB is really brewing some great beer.

swivelhips You've really got me curious if the one time I visited HPB was an off time for them. I've only visited there once and tried only a few offerings, which were okay, but pretty far from gold in my mind. Maybe I went at a bad time, or didn't try their best beers or something. But after seeing you recommend them so much recently, I'm going to have to get over there for another chance, just to see what all the noise is about.

Lovepea The problem is their batches are so small that the draft list is constantly fluctuating. One day its great house beers and awesome guest taps, the next day its leftovers. The other issue is the prices make it prohibitive to sample the house beers...no flights for $8. But yeah, give it another shot. My suggestion would be to go on the release day of Uncontrollable. It will be busy, but the draft list should be solid...oh and get the brussel sprouts.

The woman and I are heading up to LA next Saturday to see The Decemberists at the Greek, and we're going to make a day trip out of it. Couple questions:

1) Best burger in LA? Last one I had was Father's Office three years ago and, while good, was pretty pricey.

2) Is Phantom Carriage worth visiting? Looks like it's in Carson, which is pretty out of the way of the Greek.

3) Anything else worth doing in/around Griffith Park, minus the Observatory, Zoo, and museums?

If you're willing to drive to DTLA, then check out Plan Check. If not, The Oinkster might be worth checking out. They have a pretty solid burger and it's right around HPB area. Eagle Rock Brewery is also around the same area.

At worst HPB's beer has been solid. Looking forward to any bottles you send my way. Cheers!

(waiting for the backlash that the HPB beers I discussed are not as good as I say)

New up and coming brewery having a few good beers doesn't make then second best behind Beachwood for the area was all I was saying. Consistency, repeatability etc. are needed before they can have that title. Not saying they aren't headed there, just not there yet. I hope in a year we are in agreement. The potential is there for sure!

So much this.

Someone mentioned The Oinkster, which is amazing, and worth the trip.

You can also picnic at the Greek. Which I do every time I go. And by picnic I mean bring beers and chill around the venue. Lots of places to do it. One of the best venues in the city.

Everything I have had from HPB has been fantastic. Someone brought their coffee stout to our last tasting and that was amazing. Loved Lazy Susan as well.

Couldn't agree with this more. Griffith Park is a superb place to picnic, and like virtually any other grassy or wooded area in California, cops seem to welcome BYOB so long as you exhibit what they deem to be the proper racial and economic profile.

I'm not black, so I'm all good.

I was going to bring libations anyway, since I'm sure the Greek doesn't have much in the way of good, affordable refreshments.

arren: I'm not quite sure what this is as they didn't provide a description (bread pudding?, perhaps), but I think it's a good indicator of why I recommended Stout. (Though Plan Check and Oinkster also both rate highly; just haven't had a chance to visit them yet).

I ate at Stout once. They have some ******** about only cooking their burger temps to what they think is proper. I bit into the burger and the ground beef was raw and ice cold in the middle. It took everything in my power to not projectile vomit everywhere. It's the most grossed out I have ever been at a restaurant. It ****** me up too. I can only eat a burger well done now.

Counter did that to me once -- ice crystals in the middle of my burger. Took me a while to go back there, but I do still go from time to time.

That's ******* disgusting, and I don't understand how that even happens.

Plan Check is def on my list now.

Hey swivelhips I bought some bottles from HPB's latest bottle release, so I'll be giving them another shot based completely on your swooning. ;)
Yup, I'll be there this weekend to pick mine up as well, based on the love it's gotten here.
Also just got an email about another release: Cherry Spazz.

Just got the email about Cherry Spazz. Depending on how much I enjoy Uncontrollable I may have to buy Cherry Spazz too.

arren did you make it plan check?
Heading up Saturday. Definitely in the plans.

Does Highland Park allow proxies? Not sure if I'll be able to make it up to LA again this month for Cherry Spazz.
