Krausen or Kraeusen?

So which is it? "Krausen" is used almost universally on HBT, and John Palmer uses it as well.

Dave Miller spells it "Kraeusen", and I recall an ad campaign for Heilemann's Old Style that spelled it that way as well.

As far as I can tell, Ray Daniels and Jamil don't use the word (at least not in Brewing Classic Styles or Designing Great Beers).

So which is it? I want to use the correct one (personally, I'm in the "kraeusen" camp).
 
It can be written either way. ae is often used to replace ä. However, it is often easier to just remove the umlaut.

It's because we're lazy Americans, isn't it? I figured it was something no good. I for one will (from here on out anyway) ALWAYS use either the "e" or the umlaut (if I can figure out how to generate it). Who's with me?????
