For the first time I have krausen coming out of the airlock. I'd like to pull it out and put on a blow-off tube, but will my beer paint the ceiling if I do so? How do I safely release the pressure (if there's any)?

I wouldn't imagine that there would be *that much* pressure. If you are worried, though, you could always grasp a trash bag around the neck of the carboy or bucket that you are using and pull the airlock through the bag so anything could be contained.

Assuming that you are using a bubbler-style airlock, you could always hold your finger on the lid while you take it off and slowly lessen the pressure you are applying to it to test it.

Is the airlock still bubbling? If so, then there shouldn't he much pressure build up. If its totally plugged up, then you may want to be careful.

@jmferris, used your tip, and a trashbad, it didn't volcano.

@Kaz, yes CO2 was still coming out, so I just took it out.

Thanks!
