Kegerator Thermostat?

I am building a kegerator out of a found mini fridge. It's a GE brand and fits two kegs. Anyway, the built in thermostat was bad and I have the fridge working by bypassing it so that the compressor runs continuously.
My options are to:
Replace the stock "thermostat" for about $30 and hope that it's a high quality enough and accurate enough level of cooling to fit my needs,

Buy an inline thermostat for $50+

Or.......

Is it possible to use a household digital thermostat and wire that in for accurate temperature control? I can't find any info.

There's a thread on this site somewhere where someone made an external thermostat out of a house digital thermostat. However, this (https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f41/affordable-freezer-conversion-thermostat-126489/)
seems like a much better option. Probably about the same price, and no work on your part.
