Well ill start with a little bit about me. I am 21, i live in Houston Texas, and i have NEVER brewed a single bit o ANYTHING! I saw the app and have always liked the idea.

I hope to start with the spiced orange mead soon so that it will be ready by my bday (october), thanksgiving, & Christmas.

My only question is what is a carboy is it a must to make mead and how much are they?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated and im excited to be here.

Hope you all are well,
MB

Welcome to the addiction... er... hobby! Here's a few websites that should point you in the right direction.

www.austinhomebrew.com

www.northernbrewer.com

www.midwestsupplies.com

All of these sites have starter kits for mead/beer/wine etc. and will be a good place to get started! Northern Brewer also has a great resource called Brewing TV that should supplement your learning experience! Also, be sure to use the search function on this site, there is a lot of good info out there already! :fro:

Awesome man! Thanks so much for the websites and tips! That will be extremely helpful. Have you ever made mead yourself? I have never even had mead but i am kinda of a "light-weight" when it comes to alcohol. If its to strong i cant handle it, so i think the sweetness of mead will be great.

To give you a idea i enjoy spiced rum a lot for liquers, for beers i enjoy shiner bock or dos xx, for wines i like a good merlot. So that gives you a idea of what i like.

I appreciate the help,

Glad I could help! If you've never had mead I would suggest trying a few bottles first. My personal favorite is one from Fredericksburg, Texas called Oberhof Mead: http://www.bellmountainwine.com/oberhofwines.htm

It's on the dry side (not very sweet), so if you're looking for something sweeter try Thorin's Mead, also made in Texas (http://www.thorinsviking.com/). Give some meads a whirl and see what you like before you jump in head first with making your own.

One of these days i'm going to tango with making mead, but not right now.

The differences between wine/beer/mead kits are very small, and if you buy one kit it won't break your bank to start making some other drink. :mug:

Thanks for all the responses and yea i know houston isnt the greatest. Me and my S/O are trying to move to denver in 2-3 years aaaaanyways...

The only mead kit i have found is $150 and inwas looking closer to $50? Is there anyway i could make a 1 gallon batch without a full kit? Maybe just a large glass/plastic tub for it to ferment in? I know quality will suffer to a degree but hey oh well its my 1st time anyways.

Hope yall are well,
HP

I would consult with Google to see if you can make small batches of Mead. I'm sure an old wine jug would work well for a one gallon fermenter.

Welcome from another Texan. I was born and raised in Houston, but the Navy's got me in Connecticut right now. Good luck with your brewing.
