and I am still a little confused about cleaning and sanitizing. I have StarSan to use for the sanitizing, but can it be used as a cleaner too? Should I just use some oxyclean and let the equipment soak in that and then rinse it out, then use the starsan?

cleaning and sanitizing are different. so to answer your questions.

1. No
2. Yes

I've never used oxyclean and prefer the PBW soak, then starsan.

Cleaning and sanitizing are two separate things. Clean means the equipment is free of visible dirt, chunks, and debris. Use Oxyclean Free to clean your equipment, rinse well, then sanitize with StarSan.

Yeah, I am trying to read what I can right now. Hopefully preventing too many glitches on the first brew. Thanks again for your help!

The biggest way to avoid glitche is to relax, and relaize that our beer is hardier that most new brewer's give it credit...

Read this, it should help show you that. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/wh...where-your-beer-still-turned-out-great-96780/

Some have found most of my blogs helpful to them as well.

You'll do fine!

I'm an old school simpleton.

Everything gets a good washing with some dawn and 135 degree water and a wash rag.
Everything then goes into the shop sink for a good soak in mild bleach water.
Everything gets rinsed with 135 degree water, drip dried and stored.

So what happens if you use regular Oxyclean like I did 2 days ago? :p

Oxy Free isn't available in some areas, I use the OxyClean "something" (can't remember. Oxy Free is prefered but lots of people use the others without any problems
