Threw in the first hop addition today. Probably twenty minutes later I realized I did NOT note the time or set a timer.

Just kind of guesstimated by the boil off.

Otherwise, a great brew day.

All the Best,

Many of us do it every now and then. You just guesstimate and move on. So what if you miss it by 5 minutes? Ouch!!!! Time to beat yourself with an empty beer mug!!! Might throw off the IBU by .121467352 ;)

I wouldn't worry about it. I'd be much more worried about getting my late hops additions correct than my 60 minute, and boil off will be close enough.

I did this with a 20 minute addition. Thought it should be time to start chilling and flameout hops any time, looked at the timer. Oops. Good news: it turned out to be beer.

This...I often boil to a volume rather than a specific 60 minutes. The total boil time is not all that critical, I prefer to favor volume, and also time late hops to flame out.

We've all pulled a Justin at some point in our brewing "careers". Don't worry, make a mental note and do it better next time. Just remember, "it'll still be beer."

As a rule, I don't crack a beer until the boil starts, but then again my boil doesn't usually start until around 5pm, so it's the perfect time :p It's a great security measure, but honestly, sometimes my brain just takes a sober crap on me just to spite me. I punish it with beer, and it passes the buck to my liver. It's an endless cycle but we all make up in the end and have a beer together. Oh wait.. :tank:

Copious note taking will help you get in the habit of starting the clock, recording the numbers, noting volumes, taking temperatures, and all that other stuff. Eventually, it becomes an automatic routine and helps eliminate a lot of stress from the brew day, but sometimes it just slips.

It happens to all of us, eventually. :D

I'm sure the beer will be fine. It's easy to get complacent though.

Kind of cute when the noobies think they've ruined a batch through some slight mis-step. Beer is pretty forgiving stuff actually.

All the Best,

You're lucky it was the first addition... it's only bittering hops anyway and you're not going to get many more IBUs if the hops have been in for 70 instead of 60 minutes.

I have had that more often from using my computer as my timer and either accidentally closing the timer or having a computer lock up then reset.

I have always just estimated and never had any serious issues with the finished beer.

Ive done an entire beer before realizing I mixed the hops and hop schedule with the following days brew. It was for catering a wedding so I freaked out. Turned out okay though. Luckily it was just a fruity hefe vs a pale ale nothing crazy. Thats what I get for keeping a bunch of hop/grain bills ready to go

I'm always checking my post times on HBT to determine when the boil started or when I added hops or what-have-you.
