Hey guys,

Just opened up my sanke for conversion (I have yet to cut the top off) and I looked in and saw this.

Are those rust spots in the upper left or just residual beer gunk? It's on the inside along the sides too. Hard to tell if it's rust or not.
What do you guys think?

Nick

Looks like beer gunk. Stainless steel generally doesn't rust. Just fill the keg full of water and add a cup of oxyclean for the initial cleaning. Let that sit for a few days

Sort of... Stainless doesn't rust in the same way that regular steel does. Regular steel creates iron oxide layer (and could possibly be what you have). Stainless creates a passivated layer of chromium to protect itself. I had to use Bar Keepers and create a paste to remove my iron oxide and discoloration spots. It has oxalic acid which eats away at the rust and helps form a new passivated chromium layer.

Thanks for the tips guys.
99% sure it ain't rust now. I've had 5 gallons of water with PBW disolved in it soaking in the keg for 2 days now and after shaking it I saw what can only be described as gelatinous looking flakes of the same coloured stuff floating in the water. So it's most likely beer gunk.
