That's a definite pellicle. If you're making a lambic it's awesome! If not, it's toast.

i hadn't planned therefore not added any bugs into it on purpose. Cant understand how it happened, my thought is that i opened for a peak too many times and this one was kept in a large downstairs toilet where the wife had turned the dryer on!! Do you think this could be the cause

well how dusty is your laundry room? if its anythign like most, that is the last place I would want my fermentors. Also, your sanitation regimen probably had something to due with it. Do you spray under the bucket lid before/after opening it?

brand new bucket, washed and sprayed with Starsan, but yeah think i need to move the FV into the dark cupboard, got to be better there hasn't it

Opening for a peek isn't ideal, but this could have also come from poor sanitation, bad yeast (extremely low pitch rates can allow a small amount of bugs to flourish), bad equipment (scratched etc), suck backs through the blowoff (if you have little temp control).

It's happened to me when I was harvesting yeast and not making starters, 8 months later I'm blending that batch with some of the others i have coming through the pipeline and making some interesting sours. So it's not all lost

Down here in the rural south we would look at that and say that your beer is 'rurnt.' But as the good doctor Mr Klubb advises .. taste it .. if you like it, bottle it .. you may have a delicacy on your hands.

Yeah, some of us do this on purpose.

This one is very delish....

So give it a taste and see if you like it. If it seems promising, let it sit and see where it goes. Some sours can take a long time for the flavors to fully develop.

Had one get some kind of infection this spring. The more acidic flavor actually made it a pretty good lawnmower beer. I retired the fermenter since it was my oldest one and I'm blaming the scratches for the infection but I still drank the beer. It wound up being pretty quenching and not half bad even if it wasn't what I wanted.

Try some see how it tastes.

It's hard to blame the peeks for the infection. Some people open theirs often to check gravity and monitor fermentation. Did any liquid get sucked in from the airlock maybe? Sometimes if you pick up the fermenter with the airlock on it can suck a little through. Especially if it's one of those S type airlocks.

I agree with others who say wait to see what it tastes like.

I recently cooked up a batch of the Centennial Blonde and used US-05 for the first time (it was also my first-ever all grain BIAB). What started out like awesome krausen ended up looking greasy and nasty-bubbly, much like your pic. I was sure it was a goner, but after a couple weeks in the bottle it ended up being quite palatable. Not sour or lambic-y at all.

The "tincture of time" may be all it needs. Give it a chance! If it still tastes like crap after being bottled a while, then at least you know you gave it every chance.

It is possible some liquid got sucked back as i had moved the fermenter, i going to stick them in my cupboard from now on, and just tasted it and its not bad still got the hoppy taste to it, so I bottled from deep and left the last couple of litres and chucked it. Fingers crossed

quit worrying.reseal wait for more than 2min between air lock bubbles, rack or bottle....itll be fine!

less chemicals ..steam is king, plastic scratches, replace all hoses every 10-20 brews.
soak fittings in 2oz bleach and COLD WATER.(warm or hot is used to rinse).
