Just got back from a craft festival, poured my self a saison dupont clone and began to wonder what I had just taken part of. Honestly I didn't imagine the Kolsch craze had gotten this intense. Every brewery represented it seems had at least one Kolsch barrel aged in something, if not two, if not all of there samples they offered. Of course I'm exaggerating a tad but still it's bewildering to think that the craft industry has become such a fad oriented business. I realize through reading and other things that brewing has always been this way someone comes up with something excellent and different then all else follow until the next trend comes along. I guess after just answering my own question my real question is with all the knowledge, info on brewing, history, etc... Can't we leave well enough alone. Some breweries have the knack for the Kolsch , some saisons, some session saisons, some this some that and so on. What happened to perfecting a select beer style making it your own. It just seemed over the entire weekend that everyone had the same idea that was just not executed very well at all.

Clearly, no.

Just in case this wasn't a tongue-in-cheek screed (it's often hard to tell around here ;)) imo the better question is: why all the tears about such things?

There've been a half-dozen similar threads spawned recently over the same angst.

I don't get it.

I like having choices - and the more choices, the better...

Cheers! :mug:

99% of "kolsch" beers aren't even true to style.
just cause you like to warm ferment your Budweiser clone doesn't mean you can call it kolsch mofos.
you can't piss in a mr coffee and get tasters choice.

Everywhere I go, they never have any Kolsch! It's driving me crazy!!!!

Then when I see a Founders Kolsch on the shelf (spectra trifecta) I get really excited. Only to take a sip and realized I have purchased some strange soda beer. Seriously, show me where all these Kolsch style beers are!

^yeah, isnt there some German law about the Kolsch style? Like unless they are produced within a certain radius of some city and abide by the purity law, they cannot be deemed "Kolsch" it has to be like "Kolsch-Style"

Kind of like "Cheese Product"

yes, the city of koln or cologne.
law is somewhat unenforceable outside of Germany. sort of like champagne, although I think most people abide by the champagne rule.
