When I pitched my yeast a few days ago I'm pretty sure I pitched it too hot. After 24 hours of no bubbling in the airlock I was positive I had killed my yeast. It has been over 48 hours and I've yet to see any action in the airlock- so I picked up some new yeast to repitch. After activating my new yeast and opening up my fermenter I was very surprised to see this:

There still has not been any action coming through my airlock but there's definitely some activity going on with the original yeast I though was dead... I have no idea if this is good or bad and I'm not sure whether to add my new yeast now or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Well, evidently your yeast weren't dead! No need to add new stuff now.

Thanks for the reassurance, didn't think I would need to the new stuff but I def wanted another opinion. Next question though, I'm assuming my batch is fermenting? And if this is the case, why has there been no evidence of it though my airlock?

Airlock's are poor measures of fermentation. Most likely your bucket isn't sealed, and thus the gas is escaping through the gasket. There's no problem with that, but it will keep your airlock quiet.

Ah. You are totally right, I do remember a part of the lid not being sealed all the way when I opened it up. Doh! Its all sealed now, and lesson learned. I suddenly have much higher hopes about my beer!

That looks awesome.. so you activated the yeast that you were gonna pitch in just incase? sounds like you need to get another batch going, soon!!! :mug:

I'll def get on that! How long will the active yeast keep (if its at all possible after the package having been opened...)?

It will stay good for a while in a sanitized container in the fridge but I would get a little starter going just incase if you have any malt extract on hand.. look into it.. plenty of info on that here.. then just crash it in the fridge a couple days before brew day.. growers work great..
