I am a total newbie but having so much fun! And so are my friends. I have one that has offered up hops from his place and a start for my own. But... we don’t know the model (?). Is there a way to determine that?

Not cheaply or easily. You'd need to have some sort of genetic testing done. If you know anyone else that has some hops and knows what varieties they have you can always compare them to see if yours are similar. Once you get cones you can get an idea of likely varieties from the aroma but nothing exact.

You might contact an a local university cooperative extension to help ID the variety, there are some variations in the leaf, bine and cone that would be clues, though not definitive like DNA testing. The other option could be to harvest some cones make hop tea, or be daring and brew some beer to taste it. At least you'd know if it is citrusy, spicy, or floral.

A fellow brewer sent me some hops from Upstate NY that his grandmother had planted. I made a small simple batch with them. We came to believe that they were Cluster, based on the history and taste. The beer was quite good too. You might find out if there was hop farming in your area, and when. Good luck, have fun, keep us posted.
