Is it OK to hang a 5lb CO2 bottle by the "NECK"

I was trying to come up with a way to mount the bottle in my trash can kegerator up a bit to keep it out of the ice/water as much as possible. We don't have any wire hangers and I couldn't come up with any more of an "elegant" way to mount it. Since it will be inside I really don't care so much either.

What I came up with was using some heavy gauge wire making a loop and hanging the bottle by the "neck".

See picture. Is this an OK thing to do? Seems safe to me?

If the neck of the bottle doesn't break, you'll be fine

If it does break don't be around when the bottle turns into a missile. There have been a few paintballers killed by 20oz tanks breaking, hate to see the damage a 5lb tank would do.

Paintballs tanks break from improper removal and assembling of tanks and/or diving into bunkers with them without knowing how to do so and protect the tank. This won't hurt anything.

For a temp sure. Why dont you put it inside a (4ft ish) 6'' PVC pipe with a piece of (2ft ish) 4'' as a stop base. Then you can bolt it into the corner

I do want to do something like that but I am not sure if I will get it ready before I need to use the kegerator. Just looking at a temp solution for now.

For a temp sure. Why dont you put it inside a (4ft ish) 6'' PVC pipe with a piece of (2ft ish) 4'' as a stop base. Then you can bolt it into the corner

I think you'll be fine. The only thing that I'd worry about is the regulator getting bounced off the side of the kegerator as you're moving it around.

You can make a loose basket out of that wire and just drop the tank into it.

I will put the trashcan in place then put everything in it. It won't get moved around after everything is assembled.

I carry o2 bottles at work all the time by the regulator so it should be fine

you could simply put the tank outside with a longer co2 tube.

Purchase a 3/16" "U' bolt, use a strip o fapp 2" x 18" long 12 gauge sheetmetal, at one end drill two holes to attach the bottle with "U" bolt using wing nuts. At the other end of sheetmetal bend a hook to hang on the lip of the can. Simple, strong as well safer on the regulator and gauge vs dangling off a wire.

Or find a bracket like they use to hang a fire extinguisher on a wall.

My idea would be to buy a cheap metal or plastic bathroom garbage can from wal-mart drill a few holes and mount that on the outside, then drill a hole to run the line through and your $!

I have plenty of fire extinguisher bottles from job sites, sad part most without the brackets plus hanging a 20# Co2 bottle the extinguisher brackets
are too short and weak. My DIY bracket has a 20# bottle suspended.

Yeah, at 20# steel bottle would be tough. But the OP looks like he has a 5# aluminum cylinder which a fire extinguisher bracket should support easy.
