is it cheaper to order a kit or build it myself?

I've never brewed before... would it be cheaper to build a kit rather than buy one?

In my opinion kits are much cheaper unless you plan to buy in bulk.

A kit as in equipment wise or ingredients wise?

I paid $60 for my starting equipment, it came with everything needed to get started other than the pot so capper, fermenter, hydrometer some tubes, racking cane bottle brush and a book. probably would have been a bit more expensive purchased separately.

As for ingredients, buying in bulk helps a lot but if you are getting stuff for a single beer, i find that ingredient kits are a better deal

It's really going to depend on the recipe, and who you buy trough or order from. Sometimes kits are cheaper, and sometime ala cart is better.

I bought all my stuff separate at the local homebrew store, so I could decide exactly what I wanted, especially when it came to fermenters (type, size, material). I thought it was a better deal and no shipping.

It depends on the time and place (for both equipment and recipe kits). I've seen big sales on single ingredients/items that would make buying everything separately cheaper, and I've seen big sales on kits that make them hard to pass up.
