Weird question, but is turning on the bathroom light on a lot bad for wert while it ferments? I purchased a plastic big mouth bubbler and can't stop watching. Used buckets in the past.

Any type of light is bad for hops and causes them to breakdown and 'skunk' the beer and should be minimized as much as possible.

Weird question, but why are you fermenting in the bathroom?

All kidding aside, no idea, I think as long as it's not uv / natural light you'll be ok.

It's a hefeweizen. Not much hops.

Coolest (temperature) place in the house. Live in the city, condo 2nd floor.

That is where I ferment too, I have a spare soaking tub that never gets used in there. I put the fermenters in the tub and use it as a swamp cooler. I adjust the temp by running more water into the tub. I can control my ferment temps for ales without any ice or a refrigerator.

Nice! Unfortunately, my girlfriend has taken over the main bathroom. I take showers in the guest bathroom because her crap is taking over the place.

Yeah, my tap water comes out in the summer at 50* so I can get pretty low temps. I can ferment 3 batches in there at once, I just have to make sure that all the batches use a yeast in the same approximate temp range. I can't do one batch with notty and another with US-05 at the same time.

To the OP.
Just secure something around your fermentor that blocks light. Do it so that you can lift it up like it was a woman's dress when you want to see how things are looking.

Face it,... both ways are exciting!:mug:

I let my stuff ferment in the bathroom as well. I have saved a few big boxes, and i place them over my primary ferments to protect them from the light.

I ferment in my smallest bathroom. It's actually the best place in the house I have found. It's got a baseboard heater so I can actually temp control the entire room and no windows. Having said that, I also put my fementer in a passive cool box so in the summer I can keep it cool as well.

Thanks again for all the help. Saved the box from shipment and cut out a hole for the airlock. Looks ghetto but works.

Fluorescents are the worst of the artificial lights to skunk your beer.

Before I got my dedicated fridge, I used the walk-in shower in the master bath. I only blew the lid off once but it sure made for an easy cleanup.

I do the same as well...i have a basement bathroom so i do my active, primary fermentation in the tub that has a few inches of water in it. Also no windows so no light whatsoever in there...after a week or so the fermenter goes into the utility room in the basement, small enough that i can let it cool or run a small oil space heater to warm it up to 70 or so for the clean up phase.

Here you go. It's near-visible UV and blue light that is most damaging to beer. We can clearly see that sunlight is bad news. Incandescent isn't great. Cool LED lights are super bad news for beer apparently.

Now, fluorescent is interesting - I've often heard that fluorescent lights are bad for beer, but looking at several spectra for fluorescent lights, they don't look that bad. Maybe it's the high energy green light at about 550nm?
