I bought some Irish Moss today at the LHBS. I have never used it before (I've brewed about 15 batches), but for $1.19, I thought I'd give it a try. According to John Palmer, Irish Moss is not recommended for extract based brews. Any thoughts on this?

Irish Moss melts into gelatin during the last 15 min of the boild and
coagulates proteins out of solution, leading to a more clear beer.

Add 1/4 - 1 teaspoon in the last 15 min of boil for a 5gallon batch.

I don't recall reading anything about it not being recommended for
extract brews. Can't see why it would be any different than AG

Works fine for me with extract, I personally love the stuff. Never brewed without it, (except for my wheat beer) and I have always had VERY Very clear beers, might get clear beers without but I was taught to use it, and if it's not broke, don't fix it. (i've had some people think I was trying to pull a fast one and pass off a commercial brew as my beer because it was "too clear to be a home brew" LOL.

That being said, I have seen plenty of less than crystal clear beers brewed by people who haven't used it in extract brews.

For the price it's worth having some on hand if for nothing else than peace of mind.

I used it on my IPA extract brew which I just racked to the secondary today and I found some nice gelatinized clumps in the bottom of the primary. I used 1tsp. in the last 15 minutes of the boil as directed. I noticed during the transfer how clear the brew already looked and can't wait for the secondary period to expire, so I can get it kegged and sampled.

Salute! :mug:

I've used IM in my extract brews plenty and have not had a problem. I haven't gotten my brew crystal clear, but I don't expect to without filtering. For the price, you can't go wrong though!

Even when using IM, it's also been heavily advised that cold and time will greatly
clear your beer.
