Hello all, i just registered and have been lurking for quite a while. I am just getting into all grain and want to make this recipe

https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f76/richards-pumpkin-ale-23489/

I am having trouble decrypting the recipe. How do you tell how much water to use as strike and sparge? Also if one could clarify the sach rest? Sorry for the noob questions.

Thanks in advance,
Dan.

You probably need to do some more reading on the process, understanding the numbers is fairly important.

This recipe used a mash ratio of 1.32qts per pound of grain, that's where the 3.96 gallons of mash water comes from (12 pounds of grain). Just round up to 4 gallons and you are fine. For sparge water, there is a formula but it is usually pretty close to your final batch size, however it's just as easy to sparge until you have the proper pre-boil volume then stop. In this case 7 gallons of heated water should give you plenty to reach pre-boil volume...assuming you are fly sparging.

The sach rest is the temperature where your primary starch conversion is taking place.

I have glossed over a lot of things and you would be best served to get in Palmer's book and reading through the entire process a few times: Here
