Hello,

I have been brewing for 1 year now and for the first time I think I have an infection. I brewed a Pale Ale and fermented it with California Ale. I wanted to ferment for a long time to see what difference if any could be tasted. Unfortunately I used rum to seal the airlock which over time evaporated and let air in. I noticed a weird looking layer only on top. Is it safe to drink???? Attached is a pic. I appreciate all responds.

Looks like the yeast hasn't fallen yet. It is always safe to drink, but does it taste good?

Thats what my fermenting beer looks like when I dry hop. did you dry hop?

I used liquid yeast and stirred the wort. It fermented for about 7 weeks. I haven't tasted it, for fear of getting sick. The smell is not what I'm used to but its not a bad smell.

It will not make you sick. It looks fine. Check your gravity and make sure it's stable. Taste it and see how it is. It looks like yeast to me.

I just tasted the beer. It was all good, thanks for all the replies. I would have hated throwing 5 gal away. =)
