A local brewpub is doing a free wort give away this week. Im not a stout fan, nor an imperial stout. I have not brewed one up....yet. I figure if i get most of the brew for free, why not. I'm going to do a 10 gallon batch, have wyeast ringwood ale yeast on hand. Looking for some advice on hop selection and maybe other additions eg. oak? Please advise with any recomendations you all may have.

Cut an oak stick just long enough it can stand in your fermenter, then build a jig to cut spirals into it to increase the surface area. Char the whole thing with a butane torch, then soak it for a week in a pvc pipe full of makers mark whiskey.

When your beer goes into the secondary, put the oak piece in and leave it for a week or two.

....bourbon barrel aged.....

Just a suggestion

Have you done this? Do you have a thread with pictures of you doing this? How'd it come out? Sounds like a wonderful idea.

10oz of maker's mark and half of a vanilla bean work wonders to 10% abv stout... just sayin'

Add molasses specifically "black strap" to the boil at @10 min. 4-5 oz per 5g should get some flavor (you can use more). It will make the flavor really pop. Highly recommended for an imperial stout. As for hops it really doesn't matter it can be 100ibus or 20ibus but I just wouldn't use any c hops.

I am still in the world of extract brewing so the idea is from a Vanilla Bean Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout kit I ordered from brew PS. The kit comes with a lightly toasted oak piece and asks you to soak it in bourbon for a week during primary and hang it in the secondary when you add their "prepared" vanilla bean.
