So, I'm a newbie and have my second beer fermenting now. About to brew my third. My question is.

My first brew, an Irish Red, exploded in a glass carboy and made a mess. So I fixed a blow off tube and went on with the fermentation.

The second, a Creme Ale, fermenting now in a 6.5 gal bucket that I got from my local brew store, is about to and since its in a bucket, and not in the glass carboy, I have no way to fix a blow off tube. It only has a hole for an airlock. So what do I do? So far I've been taking the airlock out and cleaning it and then replacing it, but I need to leave it and not have to worry every time I leave the house. Please help!

The third brew, a Bourbon Barrel Porter, I'm doing tomorrow is going into the 6.5 gal glass carboy, and since I'm worried about always having a blow off problem I am going to fix a blow off tube from the start. Is that a good idea?

You can find plastic tubing in many sizes. I bet you can find one that will work with that bucket.

I hate the tiny grommet in most of the lids these days. I'm planning on drilling them out to a more reasonable size which will fit a standard tubing and I can just use drilled stoppers with my airlocks. They don't tend to get stuck and pull out like those grommets.

I use a 3/4" spade bit to drill out anything that either doesn't have a hole or has one that's too small. It fits a #3 stopper.
