How did you come with an 8 gallon batch size? 10 gallon kettle?

Anyone ever dry hop with Chinook?

Yup. twice. I did a Haus Pale Ale clone that I bittered with Saaz and aroma'd witrh Chinook, still the best beer I ever made. See the home page ofr Firestone-Walker pale ale.

My first lager was a super heavy weight Budweiser clone, 1.092 OG, also aroma'd with Chinook at flameout. It is, rrrrrp, pretty darn good.

Cool. I picked up a couple more Herb Balls at Austin Homebrew Supply, so I'll drop an ounce of Chinook in it when I keg it.

Ed, how is yours doing? Mine is still bubbling every 2-3 seconds and this is day 9. I've slowly raised the temps into the mid 60's over the past few days so I hope it will finish sometime.

OK, Here's what I'm going to do.

I'm going to make a Haus Rye by adding 2# of malted rye to my Haus Ale grain bill and add 1 oz. of Cascade as dry hopped and the first oz. as FWH.

That sounds like a great idea. You know your haus ale and so the additions/changes will be easy to detect and therefore recognize what they have contributed.

Looks good to me.

I recon a Rye IP needs 3-4 months minimum to be taste-worthy.

I transferred to secondary today 1.072-1.016 and after 12 days it is still bitter but the taste is great. I added 2oz of the Jack Daniels chips and I'll check it every week or so til it mellows a bit then I'll bottle.

Damn the sample tasted great:rockin:

I am planning an extract rye IPA as my next (5th) batch...

7.5 lbs Pale LME
1 lb Amber DME
1 lb Crystal 120
1 lb Flaked Rye

Steep Crystal and Rye at 155 for 30 - 60 minutes

Havent 100% decided on the hop schedule yet, but I plan on using 2oz Columbus and 2oz Cascade. Was thinking:

1oz Columbus @ 60
1oz Columbus @ 20
1oz Cascade @ 10
1oz Cascade @ 1

Any thoughts on the above? Feedback appreciated.

I brewed up the above recipe today, came up a little light on the OG (1.054) because I boiled 7 gallons and I guess I didnt lose as much during the nice weather. I racked almost 6 gallons and left 3/4 of a gallon of wort and trub at the bottom of the kettle.

Also took 30 minutes to get to pitching temps. I love the warm weather, but might have to hang up the carboy for a while after this one. Temps in the fermentarium (basement) are in the low 70s, but I put the carboy on the concrete floor as a bit of a heatsink.

I dont' know if it's going to be any good, but here's what I did today.

BCB Rye IPA

10# 2 Row Pils
2# Rye
2# Vienna
12 oz. Crystal 60L
8 oz. Flaked Barley

1 oz. Tettnanger FWH 4.4%
1 oz. Chinook 60 min 12%
0.5 oz. Chinook 30 min 12%
0.5 oz. Chinook 5 min 12%

Mashed in at 154 degrees for 70 minutes. Ran off 7 gallons and boiled for 90 minutes. It's chilling right now. I'm going to whirlpool it let it sit and rack clear wort off to the fermenter. Going with hydrated Safale -05.

I think this will be a big beer that will take some aging.

Kegged the Rye IPA this morning.

O.G. 1.064
F.G. 1.010
ABV 7.2%

Tastes nice so far. I dropped an ounce of Cascade in a stainless herb ball in the keg.

Next check is in 4 weeks.

That is one sexy beer-

hrmm... I think I am going to attempt that with Summit hops and 4lbs of rye-

Why mess with your sucess? Cause I am crazy like that! Out of control if you will

I am working on a Rye IPA recipe right now and I have noticed a lot of these recipes contain a small amount of wheat. What is the reasoning behind this?

OMGosh, what a freekin tasty beer. Brilliant, Lovely, Splendid, Awesome!
