If I can manage to find this item in store, would it be feasible to use without cutting a hole in the lid for the carboy neck? I don't know how flat the bottom is but according to measurements on targets website it should give me nearly 4 inches of clearance over the carboy which should leave some space for an airlock.

Now it is more expensive than the 50 quart, nearly twice the price but I wouldn't need to cut a large hole and ruin the lid or pay extra for styrofoam boards to form a new lid. I figure to allow the pressure out I can drill a small hole through the lid. Anyone think 1/8 or 1/4 size airvent in the lid would be realistic for off gasing?

Going out to Home Depot later to get the parts for my mash tun. For some reason I have rectangular coolers from my brothers/parents that range from 4quart all the way up to about 100 quart.

The problem with those is the "hump" in the bottom for the wheels. I'm assuming it's like the rest of the square coolers i've seen, where the bottom is not level at all.

It would be doable with a block down there so your carboy would sit level in it... but you'd need some extra height at the top to account for that.

Couldn't find it in any stores, and paying for it at 50 dollars+ shipping is stupid. I could get a fridge or freezer on craigslist for that.

I have one at home, I'll check if my carboy fits inside... there is a hump, but it might still work.

I saw a post on another forum, where somebody turned one of these into a combo kegerator/mash tun/fermentation chiller. I'll have to check the link when I'm at work, but I think he cut a small hole in the top because he still needed room for an air lock.

Well for any one interested... Here is how it fits... a 6G carboy sits flat, but it will not close, obviously there is not an airlock.
