I goofed up making my first mead. I forgot to measure my initial gravity and was hopeful someone might be able to give me a good guess by looking at the recipe I used! I ordered a kit from morebeer. 15lbs honey and then 6lbs fruit purée after couple weeks. I used a champagne yeast too if that helps. Thanks so much! I appreciate it. Any helpful advice is welcome too! I just sampled and it’s pretty dry and strong. I was breathing fumes lol. Started project on 11/21/2020. Down to about 6 bubbles per minute now.
Thanks!
H-:)

How much water did you add to the honey, or alternatively, what was total mixed (dissolved) volume of your honey plus water? And what kind of fruit purée did you add later?

I did 5 gallons of water and 1 peach and 1 apricot vinters harvest 3lb each for fruit purée. Thank you for helping.

with the honey disolved it was a little over 5 gallons I’d say it turned into 5 1/4 gallons total combined volume

Assuming 35 points per pound per gallon (PPG), 15 pounds of honey in 5.25 gallons total would have an OG of ~ 1.100. I do wonder though... 15 pounds of honey plus 5 gallons of water should have produced something like 6.25 gallons of solution. But assuming 5.25 gallons @ 1.100, I'd estimate that the purées would have reduced that effective OG to 1.093.

OTOH, if you did use a full 5 gallons of water, and if the honey/water volume was actually 6.25 gallons, I'd estimate an OG ~ 1.084. Adding the purées would have brought the effective OG estimate down to about 1.079.

(In both examples, I used 3lbs, 1 oz for each purée, because that's the size can they come in.)

Wow!! That’s excellent!! It wasn’t exact when I was measuring the water. The instructions said to fill the pot a certain amount so I did that and then when I poured it into my fermenting bucket I was like crap. That’s a little over. It was about here when I poured it in thanks so much for your help! Really appreciate it
