I'm finally coming around to scotch, but I need it watered down and on the rocks. I drink my bourbon on the rocks, slightly melted.

Watering down is ok. A lot of whiskeys can taste better with a small dash. It helps to break down the whiskey so you can taste a larger range. Something to do with carbohydrates I thinx which is why it will go cloudy with water.

Cask strength should be watered down or you will cause internal damage! I always take a couple of sips and then add a tiny tiny bit of water.

My wife doesn't mind a scotch down her neck from time to time. ;)

VERY nice! Another scotch lover. My favorite lately is Macallan 12 yr. Ever try it? IMHO, it puts the "Glens" to shame!

Yeah, I like the Macallan as well. But I still prefer a nice bourbon to a single-malt any day. I have a bottle of Lagavulin 16 y.o. languishing on the shelf, always the second choice behind a small-batch bourbon. I know it's like comparing apples to oranges...

One thing I've noticed is that among my friends, there's a correlation between smoking and preference for Scotch.

Thank you! So many say it's a travesty to serve "on the rocks" or "with a splash of water." I love the flavor of many whiskys, but (IMHO) hardly any are worthy of drinking completely "neat."

Ice is bad due to the amount of water increasing over time. If you must put ice in then do it. Just don't put anything else in - coke should be a hanging offence.

Like beers there are thousands of different types of whiskeys, you will NOT like them all. Depends on what your taste is - they range from completely bland to slap you in the face with a bag of peat. Highland Park is a good middle of the range one and not too overpowering. Macallan is good also, matured in sherry casks which makes it a little sweeter and smooth.

P.S. I was in the Scottish Malt Whisky Society :D, any questions just fire them at me :)

I hear you...but I also like my whisky chilled (sure, you can taste more complexity at warmer temps, but it's my preference, and I'm sticking to it). I try to stick to 1-2 ounces with an ice cube or two. Consumed at the correct rate, it doesn't get too watered down.

I had a friend who liked scotch and Coke. The operative word is "had."

Troof! My brother-in-law came over, sw my 20 year old Pappy Van Winkle and made a coke drink with it. I almost punched him. $90 for a bottle, and he perverts it with coke? He did the same when he saw my Bookers (which I'm drinking now). I told him that the Pappy isn't to be mixed with Coke.

My other brother-in-law is a fellow bourbon man and he likes his neat. Laughs at me for liking mine on the rocks. I just can't drink hard liquor warm.

Neat is the way. Put it in the fridge? In Scotland it is drunk to warm you up. Sometimes known as a nippy sweetie. :D

Excellent gift! It would last me quite a while. I discovered long ago, and the hard way, that whisky, bourbon, scotch, what have you, in excess has an adverse effect on my personality. Small measures these days, and VERY small. I like it, too much after a while. Then some a-hole shows up that looks just like me but is a total jagoff.

If I do have one at home, it's one, and that's it.

I am with you on this. I get very agressive and should be locked up if I drink more than a quarter of a bottle. Have nearly killed myself on a couple of occasions:eek:
I only drink for the taste these days and if I want to get the buzz it is only when I am alone with the wife and child away for the night. Did not used to be like that but your body changes over time I suppose.

Yeah I know that tale. As an early 20-something I was wondering why in the hell I'm raising my fist to knock someone out for no good reason. Freaked me out, because I'm not that person and didn't want to become that person. So from that point on, small measures when I did. Now that middle age has set in, most things are in small measures. :drunk:

But boy, tasty tasty. :cross:

The last time I got into the whisky (16 year old lagavulin) I was alone in the house listening to bagpipe music wearing my kilt. Was trying it on as I was going to be leading out the coffin of my wifes gran (she was born in Glasgow) out of the church. Wife and child already gone up north. Bit nervous so was practising to the time of the music (amazing grace of course). Got very homesick and managed to drink nearly all of the bottle. The car journey up (4hrs) was a bit of a struggle and nobody was happier than me when the service was over. Took the kilt off though as even at a funeral females just can't help themself, normally I am okay with this and flash the todger but I felt that it would have been not in keeping with the event so to speak. :p

Yessir, I don't think the missus would have appreciated it, probably not in the best of taste.

Funny as hell mind you, at least to others' perspective. :rockin: But then you'd have had an earful for 4 hours back, and that's no fun for anyone. :D

I like the Macallans as well, but my favorite continues to be the Dalwhinnie 16 Year old. If you haven't tried it, you will be pleased when you do. Has nice subtle fruit undertones and doesn't have a harsh peat background like Laphroaig (sp).

I'm just getting into scotch - right now I'm more of a bourbon drinker. It's one of those things that will be nice to have around the house for special occasions.
