It needs to cool down to 60 degrees and then test it. Twirl it a few times to get any air bubbles off the glass and then read the low point of the wort line. You know when the wort hits the glass it kind of curls up a little. Do not read the curl but the flat of the wort.

The temp of the wort is important as well. Hot wort is not as dense as cool wort so reading it hot will look like it is not very strong while it is.

To read the numbers the scale that starts at 0.000 is the one you use. If the line hits on 70 then the wort as long as it is 60 degrees has a specific density of 1.070. Then before you bottle you measure it again and it will be much lower in the beer because alcohol is less dense that wort. Subtract the final gravity number from your first gravity number and then multiply that sum by 131 to get the ABV. It takes two readings to figure ABV.

Girl you got some 6% plus beer going on there :rockin:

Thanks, you are my mentor, v-man. I had a feeling when I added the grain that I didn't measure it right. Because it filled up the whole kettle and the other "half" didn't. So I didn't have to use any LME at all, but only used one pound for a 3 gallon batch. Just to make sure I had enough sugars. Also added a cup of honey at the end. I'm thinking now my other brews might be higher in alcohol content than I thought. But, I have brewed with some of my friends from the restaurant/bar across from the hospital and using their equipment, continually tell me my beer is under 3.5 %. Do you think they are wrong? I'm still on a beer abstinence diet, sucks, and I'm cheating here and there. Gotta see what it tastes like!!

Only sure way to tell how much alcohol is in the beer is by using the starting gravity and the finishing gravity. I really do not see how by using one measurement one can figure ABV.

I went to a party a few years ago or the party started after beer and cigar night was over at my buddies house. His son decided to make a drink called pink panty droppers. LOTS of hard alcohol with juice and beer in it. I tasted it and I could not taste any booze but wow there was a lot of booze in it.

I left before they started drinking that stuff knowing all hell was going to break loose....And it did :cross:

If you are interested my system for checking the gravity consists of after I run the wort into my boil kettle I stir it up and then pull about half a cup of wort out and stick it in the freezer while heating the rest up to a boil. About the time it comes to a boil and I get a good slow rolling boil going I take my sample out of the freezer and check the temp. I might have to let it warm a bit or cool it some more but I am usually pretty close to 60 degrees. I measure the density and than mark it down in my log book.

I do not worry about it being high or low it is what it is going to be. And because I have written all that stuff down I know that a 9 pound grain bill with my system will get me right at 1.040 starting gravity for 6 gallons. And since I start with a 6 gallon boil and top off I avoid a lot of math which is good for me since I am drunk by the time I pitch the yeast and would screw the math up.

At first I did not worry to much about gravities and such but as I have brewed more I found I wanted my beer to be more consistent so I started tracking the stuff. I found that the way I used to brew I was getting more alcohol that I wanted in the beer and that I needed to scale the grains back some.

Whew long winded huh :D

Not that I want to do it but I am curious about the PWM. Does that change the sine wave into a modulated sine wave then meaning changing the hertz of the signal. And have they come down in price any. Last one I bought was 8 grand I believe but I was able to go from a DC signal to a modulated AC signal. Dang trying to remember how it did it now but I remember the modified sine wave looked like a series of steps rising and falling at 60 hertz.

Like I said before to many years ago since I tinkered with it. Not even sure where my old RCA oscilloscope is anymore and pretty sure I could not use it with out the books anymore

Heck if I know! Sounds about right, according to this illustration. Sounds like you know a heck of a lot more about them than I do. That's why I chose the PID controller for RIMS. I kinda understand that a little bit more.

350px-PWM%2C_3-level.svg.png
An example of PWM in an AC motor drive: the phase-to-phase voltage (blue) is modulated as a series of pulses that results in a sine-like flux density waveform (red) in the magnetic circuit of the motor. The smoothness of the resultant waveform can be controlled by the width and number of modulated impulses (per given cycle

Looks like that is how it is done. Funny how I remembered the shape of the wave huh. And no I know just enough to get in trouble messing with the stuff :rockin:

Thanks v-man, the explanation to me doesn't seem long-winded, that's the part I was trying to understand and I guess I need many words.

So, in other things going on, I'm more than just flooded in, the driveway is gone in 2 places. Washed away. Even family couldn't get back here with a 4-wheel drive truck with big tires. A river runs through it.... in 2 places....

Argh, I'm going to see if the city will fix my driveway. They rent land for power lines from us and use the driveway. In fact, right before all this flooding, they were here driving along in their huge trucks to trim trees. If they want access they need a way to get there. I called as a concern, in renting land to them, we also agreed they would have access. Sorry, access washed away, hate to be the one to tell you. Don't get your trucks trapped trying to get back here. Heads up!! Someone is supposed to call me back.

Something bothering me and I hate to crash the party.

You ever been wronged? Truly wronged? Your Life changed because of lies against you?

I have.

There are two things a person can do about that. Seek vengeance or seek forgiveness for those who harmed you. I choose the latter.. Forgiveness.

Doesn't mean in my mind I don't want to seek some revenge. That would be easy.

What it means in my heart is I forgive. There was a person in my life who has nearly destroyed me. Anger would be easier but in my heart I know and choose to forgive.

Tomorrow is Lent. It's a good time to let bygones be bygones.

Still working on my Lent sacrifices but thinking Booze, Tobacco and HBT might be them for the next 46 days.

HBT? Maybe I foolishly think I have some friends here.. But my instincts have always been very good and I know I do have some wonderful friends here.

I'll see you guys and gals later, after Easter. I'll never give up forever. Just need to get back in touch in a relationship with God. Him and me have some things to hash out.

Now I understand why I can't send you a PM! I hope you're doing well my friend. Thanks for the cheese making stuff. We made a couple batches of mozzarella, and it came out great! Take care Dan! See you after Easter!

Yeah, Dan is off lenting. He'll be back.

I can't even get to the parts of the driveway that family said washed away. Too many obstacles. That's my dog, Mister. He likes to chase possums at night.

This is parts of my driveway in the pics.

Hey guys and girls. I just got back from Milwaukee a bit ago. To make a long story short I am now the proud Grandfather to Harrison David, born yesterday morning at 7:08, 7lbs 10oz. My first grandchild and a grandson to boot!
Needless to say I am very proud, even though all I had to do with the whole deal was stand around and look grandfatherly. Mother and baby are doing great and everything went very smooth for it being a first baby.

Pictures will be forthcoming as soon as I get an account set up somewhere, I planned on having that done but he surprised everyone and showed up a couple weeks early.

Congrats man from both my wife and I. Weird feeling huh :D

Speaking of hairy brewers... were we speaking of hairy brewers? Anyway, I was talking to this guy behind me in the aisle at the grocery store. An older fella. Seemed nice, we struck up a conversation while waiting. I was wearing a tank top, this was last summer, not recently. The guy grabs my wrist and lifts my arm in the air, looked and said "I thought so". Then he dropped my wrist. The hair hardly grows and it's blonde enough you can't really see it, not from far away anyway. So he said "I thought so". To this day I wonder what he meant by that.

Now that was weird. :ban:

Yeah, he said "I thought so".

So he expected to see short, blonde, curly hairs under there? He knew I was too lazy to shave 'em? I don't shave anything, let it grow, my leg hair is blonde too so :p Hair doesn't really grow on my body, barely, so I gotta keep what I can get. :drunk:

Happy brew day dance, :ban:

As much as we knew about you before BL, you've finally hit the point of TMI.

Oh, gosh. I think I know why he was checking there. He deserved a knee.

Well, ran of room in my kettle. I'm maybe 1.5 inches from the top and attempting a slow rolling boil. Was going to add a couple pounds of LME to make up for the shortage of grain, but only ended up with room for maybe one pound. If I warm up LME to use, with hot tap water, then can't use it all, am I supposed to refrigerate the rest of the jar? I haven't been refrigerating it. Getting away from using extract, but nice to have if the wort doesn't seem thick enough or sweet enough. I'll do a gravity reading this time too. Out of curiosity. But now I'm planning to add some extra fermentables, maybe honey at the end after it boils down.

Well, I planned a straight forward IPA, but looking like it'll turn into something else now.
That depends on how much water you added. If you are around 1:2 the amount of water to LME by volume or less, your fine almost indefinitely. Up to about 1:1 you should be fine for a couple of weeks, though it will eventually mold. More water then that, and you should refrigerate. If you aren't sure, refrigerate. The same is true when making syrup of almost any kind.

Okay, I got the hydrometer floating in a sample, now how do I read it? It's about 4 lines below the 15 on one side and 2 lines below the 60 on the other side, the side that say ABV is about 1.3? See, have no idea if I hit my OG. or whatever I'll end up with. Gravity reading at 80 degrees.
If I understand you correctly, your gravity reading is 1.064 uncorrected. Rooftopbrew has that temp corrected at 80 to 1.066. If you fermented dry, IE: clear to 1.0 then that would give you an ABV of 8.8%. More realistically, a FG of 1.010 - 1.020 is more likely. So probably 6.1-7.5%.

Someones perception of alcohol flavor is effected by so many things that it's almost impossible for anyone to accurately gauge alcohol content by flavor.

It needs to cool down to 60 degrees and then test it. Twirl it a few times to get any air bubbles off the glass and then read the low point of the wort line. You know when the wort hits the glass it kind of curls up a little. Do not read the curl but the flat of the wort.

There is actually a method for determining the ABV of a finished brew by measuring the gravity, then boiling the liquid for an hour. After that you replace the lost liquid volume with distilled water, and take another gravity reading. The increase in the gravity after the alcohol has been replaced with water is supposed to give you the ABV.

Not something I've tried, but it passes my logic check.

...So, in other things going on, I'm more than just flooded in, the driveway is gone in 2 places. Washed away. Even family couldn't get back here with a 4-wheel drive truck with big tires. A river runs through it.... in 2 places....
That is worrisome. I hope your house is good and far from the flooding stream.

i like this time, too. all the family, as much as i love them, are asleep, but dad HAS to have his time. a wife, a 12 yo girl, and a 10 yo boy, overwhelm me every once in a while. normally mom takes care of them, but when she wears out, i'm done pretty quick

Welcome to the party. How about a little music?

Welcome to the party, have a seat. I think we are done talking about body hair, that's TMI. Built anything awesome lately? I think that's what we are talking about now.

Yup, that's better. Here's what I'm drinking tonight. Remind you of anything? :) The only thing I did to this photo was rotate it. No image modification other then that, and no filter on the camera.

It reminds me of the color blue?

I'm pretty sure I know too and if I see him again, I will walk over and give him a knee kick. Knee kicks are always so effective.

House won't flood here, we are on a plateau. Right now, actually a little island. At least 15-20 feet above the water level. High and dry as long as we don't go too far.

Lol, my avatar. :p

That glowing milk mead.

Out of curiosity...how many velvet posters are in that room?
What is this thread you speak of? I must now search it out.

No velvet posters. I have an extraneous fluorescent light fixture in the kitchen. So I put black light bulbs in it to add some atmosphere at parties... I've never had a party here but it's fun to play with the black lights anyway. :fro:
