Very cool.
Depending on when, what your timeline is and what you want to do on the trip, there are plenty of beer opportunities and other things to do.

Homebrew, brewpubs within reasonable drive, good old local bar, seafood, shooting, barbeque, looking for elk in the woods.
Whatever interests you!

every single thing you said interests me, can't wait!

Dang snaps not looking at a map but Sequoia is about due west of me. Never been there but I would love to go sometime.

I've been on just about every trail and summit in Sequoia and Kings in my life. I'd be more than happy to host you. We even have a spare room.

Visalia, California. The God fearing, right wing armpit of this beautiful state. Gateway to MY beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range.

I'm here. Should have let you guys know I was eavesdropping earlier. Been working on some Mountain Rescue stuff. The wonderful state of California has decided that our rescue truck needs to be retrofitted and smoke tested by 01/01/2014. This means some very expensive additions that out little team can't afford at this time. Working on ways to drum up some funding for it.

I can buy you a beer to start?

Lived in Melbourne, VIC all my life. Been here in Colorado for 10 years. Last brew I made was only NZ and OZ hops. IPA. Delicious.

My wife lived in Alice springs for a bit and then moved to the Gold Coast before moving back to Chch.

I think we are going to take a trip before long just to see her kids and I have never been in that part of the world

Who was asking about a fast drinking barleywine earlier? I've got one that's good after about 45-60 days.

I've got a 30 year class reunion coming up in July and was asking yesterday.
I have never made barleywine but I was thinking of including it in with a couple other beers to bring along.
Two kegs and bottles of barleywine.
We only had about 34 people in my class so that much beer plus the wine that another classmate brings from the winery she works at is more than plenty.

I figured that if it's under 9% it should be good by then.
I found an extract recipe that looks promising but one that I know someone has brewed and likes would be nice.

So many of the recipes that are posted are simply word soup.
They envision it and post it with no idea of how good it is.
I can do that!
I want one that's been tested and someone keeps in their recipe book.

I've never been to Alice Springs, but been to Gold Coast. You should do it. Plan wisely though.

LOL no need for a room but dang I would love to see it sometime. Sadly the only time I got into Cali was San Fran and South from there. Still a beautiful state

I would definitely like to try that peppercorn IPA!

Oh and plastic. Conicals and buckets. I will never clean a carboy again if I don't have to! I've got a shelf full of them. Aside from an apple beer I've had on Brett for about 6mo, I'm all plastic. That one is interesting. Gonna pitch some wort into it next chance I get.

I have one that I did for Christmas that was great. I added a LOT of punkin pie filling to it, it was over 10%, but very drinkable, and would be easy to lower. I used a bit of extract to make it easier on my mash tun. I'll pm you if you'd like.

Crap I think I can hear my phone telling me it is about dead but I have not used it for months and I have no clue where it is. I hope the dang thing dies soon

OK Aussie, you've got two people interested in the peppercorn IPA.

Any comments on it? A recipe?
Do you just make an IPA and use peppercorns like a dryhop?

Well Sequoia is considerably south of SF (thank God) but well worth the trip. I envision you picking up Aussie on your way to WA, loading up on rare PNW brews and all three of you guys coming down here. We can brew, drink, hike, drink, shoot, drink. Etc.

You sir have a hell of a plan!

We could drink too. Dan and bigbeerfreak are local too. (Though I've never met Dan)

Ick, I've had a peppercorn brew. A rye peppercorn ale from a highly acclaimed brew pub. No es bueno. :(

Peppercorn seems like the type of thing you need to get just the right amount of to not have it too subtle or too overpowering.

Well the dryer is finally done so I can go to bed.
Not going to sleep for a while probably, but I can check out my newest issue of brew your own and see if anything else happens on here.

You sleep on your lunch break? To me, sleeping for that short time would make it worse. Then again I've never had to work this time of night.

Hey... my name came up earlier! I don't know if I see this site as a venting/therapy opportunity or just brewing my own beer, in general, as that opportunity. Rough times and I know all about the Wayback Machine, Internet Archive. I started a blog in 1996 before blogs existed and once in a while I get in trouble over something I say, but 99%, nothing but a positive experience. Any small amount of trouble I get into is far surpassed by what I get back. Anyway, I am heavily involved in the art/craft world, I sell instructional CDs. Not only is being somewhat crazy->certifiably insane accepted, it is almost expected.

I've been on graves for a year now. With a 1 yr old at home that I watch while my wife works I've trained my body to sleep at every chance I get. My schedule is all screwed up. On Monday mornings at 06:35 I clock out and head home. At that point I've been awake since 14:00 the day before. I go to sleep on Monday night (30-34 hrs awake) I sleep Monday and Tuesday nights on a normal same schedule. On Wednesday I wake up at 06:50. I go to work Wed night and don't get to sleep until around 09:30 when my daughter takes her first nap. That nap is usually around 2.5-3 hrs. I get to sleep again from approx 15:00-17:00 at which point the wife and two oldest get home from work/school. I put them to bed and am at work at 21:55. Weekends I get to sleep from around 07:30-14:30. After that we brew and hang out until bed/my work time. I love weekends.

Wow, understandable why you sleep every chance you get!

It's a sacrifice I'm making right now to keep my daughter out of daycare. We are researching having my wife open a small daycare at home so we can have a little income off of it and I can move to a different EMS company and begin Paramedic school. I've seen my health decline from it (mostly my weight) as I've always been extremely active climbing and racing bicycles and haven't been able to for the past year or so. I've never been out of shape in my life until this year.

I think you've opened a few posts with stating your need to vent!

Personally, for me this is one of the few chances I have for talking with other adults.
I love my daughter dearly, but conversations aren't the same as with other adults.
I get to talk about all sorts of stuff with strangers and with people that in a fairly short time have become sort of friends.
It does help keep the sanity for me.

Keeping a kid out of daycare and making sure they are raised by their parents is a very worth while cause.
When my ex got pregnant, I had her quit working and she never went back to work until we split.
My daughter only went to daycare for an hour or so per day when she was littler and that was just because as an only child I thought she should learn to interact with other kids before she started school.

She did get some daycare after my ex and I split, but in the end she now catches the bus and gets dropped off at my brothers house up the road.
My sister in law is awesome and watches her for me and they've got a bunch of kids with one that's only a little older that my daughter plays with.
