At my job (Marine Corps), they block another forum I'm active on - AirWarriors. AirWarriors is a bunch of current, former, and wannabe Naval Aviators discussing anything under the sun. Most of it is aviation or military related. The USMC doesn't block HBT. Weird.

At my job, they just block sites related to a whole swath of subjects, so you can't even go there in the first place.

My last internship was at a huge corparation. They had the typical web blocker. Couldn't access any streaming media. That was annoying since you couldn't access Pandora. I think it worked by volume of traffic to a site. If a new site all of a sudden got a lot of volume, it was up to big brother to deem it kosher. Since I was probably the only one in the entire corporation accessing HBT, it never got blocked. At least over that summer.

I bought their 35lb postal scale with 0.1oz accuracy for 0.98 + like 15 to ship or something.

1000g by 0.1g scale

got this one for around $5 shipped from hong kong. It works pretty well so far... i havnt had much to measure with it since I dont have any grains to brew with.

Found this on Craiglist. Going to pick it up today. Good for 1,000lbs. Will this be good for hops? JK. I've wanted a scale for the shop for some time. But I also need a small scale for water salts.

Hey you IT guys. How do you look at logs and know what sites are being opened?

Examining the logs is easy, but of course the exact mechanism is dependent on any particular company's setup. The real key here (for the OP) is that the IT guys generally don't sit around monitoring web traffic and email waiting for someone to run afoul of policy. Rather people are busted when someone's supervisor specifically requests a review of an employee's activities because they're out to get them. Only then would an IT guy go check the logs and turn over such information. Trust me. The IT guys don't have any desire to play cop.

What a bitch! You mean the boss gets upset when you are looking at a "homebrew website" while he is paying you to work? What is he thinking? Does he really expect you to try to find ways to improve your work when you have nothing else to do? That is so unfair! I say quit that job now and go find one where they are more understanding about your using their computer for your hobbies/interests while you are on the clock!

^^^^ this! Unless you are REALLY beating the crap out of the internet and someone's wondering why "it's slow" the only reason they're really likely to notice is because someone asked them to notice.

I'm the system admin, I'm the guy who looks at the logs I'm not behind the firewall either (boy did the techs howl when we turned up the firewall earlier this week too! hahaha).

So yeah I guess I'm the guy who would rat you out if you worked here, sorry! (I wouldn't unless I saw you were browsing stuff when there was work WAITING on you)

Sorry to hear about the suspension hopefully it won't reflect too badly on you later. I know I've worked at places where they could hold a grudge forever.
