In my drunken stuper I forgot to aerate the wort before I pitched my wyeast 1214 belgian strain... It's been 12 hrs and nothing is happening. I've read that this strain can be slow to start. Is it too late to aerate? This is a Belgian Trippel hybrid so I am planning on pitching another strain ( wyeast American ale 1272) both were done with yeast starters. Should I leave it alone, or aerate b4 I pitch the American strain? Have I ruined the batch?

I would say you are on the bubble with aerating...if it was only 6 hours I would say go for it, but you are towards the end of lag phase when the yeast put their focus on things other than taking in O2.

First of all I think its probably fine, 12 hrs really isn't that much time.

Not to be a dick at all and I will say that I drink while brewing, but I have restrained a little more lately and things go so much smoother. Just sayin:mug:

I think you're fine so long as the krausen hasn't formed. The yeast are likely still in the replication phase and will continue to take up all dissolved oxygen.

Aerate now. If it's a high gravity beer, it will need it.

Why use 2 yeasts? The 1214 will give the flavor and will have reproduced ready to consume the available sugars. Adding the 1272 later will probably not do much.

I'd be interested to know why you are doing it this way, and what your expected results are.

If you haven't aerated I would do so now. I had an honey oat brown ale that I did the samething. There was no krausen so I decided to aerate after 12 hours and the beer is just fine today.

...I wouldn't worry. its good that you shook it, I have made many beers (every one) without aerating...fermentation started quickly and the beer turned out good...aerating is legit, but FAR to over emphasized.
