Hydrometer reading

Yesterday, I checked my first brew and it's almost at the recommended FG. Is there a rule of thumb about checking with a hydrometer and exposing your beer to oxygen before you secondary or bottle it? thanks

if you are just pulling up a sample for a hydrometer reading, you should be fine. Dont return the sample to the carboy, just sneak it as a sample to see how your beer is progressing
