Hydrometer reading 990

A complete wine virgin so please be gentle.
Started some orange wine 4 days ago and the hydro reading has gone down to 990 from 70 on the blue strip.
Is this normal?

Yes. That means active fermentation is finished, and the wine can be moved to a carboy (if it's in a bucket or something) so that it can age and clear a bit. It should be topped up to within an inch or two of the bung, and then racked (siphoned) to a new container whenever there are lees 1/4" thick or more on the bottom, or any lees at all in 45-60 days.

Yes, fruits can go VERY dry. My lowest reading came from a passion fruit wine and was an estimated 0.985.

Need more information:

• What are you making?
• What was your starting SG (original hydrometer reading)?
• What is your current SG (hydrometer reading)?
• How long has it been fermenting?
• Why do you thing more sugar would help you?
