hydrometer in one-liter PET bottles

I'm going to take another shot at ordering a hydrometer online (the first one arrived in pieces).

I understand that hydrometers are typically used with a 250ml graduated cylinder. I make cider mostly in 1-liter and 1.5 liter PET bottles. Would I be able to skip the graduated cylinder and just put the hydrometer straight into the bottles?

I don't think the one I use would fit through the opening. And it'll be hard to read, but a liter should be tall enough.

I mainly use the storage tube that came with the hydrometer....
