I just put a sanitized hydrometer into my secondary fermenter. This particular brew was in the primary for 8 days and when racked only dropped to 1.020 from 1.062. The activity has almost stopped so I tipped the carboy and re-suspended the yeast. I wanted to see if the gravity dropped any so in went the hydrometer. It is a spare so it will stay in there until the beer gets kegged.
The beer is still at 1.020 so I hope the yeast will get back to business. I'm half way tempted to put some dry yeast in to kick start it.

I'd be a little afriad to drop a hydrometer in a carboy-- I can't imagine how I'd get it out of there without breaking it.

Just float it out after you rack the beer to the keg. I have done this before. Racking the beer out drops the hydrometer gently onto the sediment, then it can be floated to the top.
