Hi All, I'm new to brewing and am curious to know techniques for taking the original gravity read. I bought a baster and took a sample out of the wort as it wrapping up cooling in ice bath. Thing is, it leaks, and drips back in to the pot.....and just seems sloppy to me. I might be too uptight about being sanitary on that....but what do you all do to take that sample for your sacchrometer? thanks.

I just take the sample and put it in the hydrometer case. after taking a reading i discard the sample or drink it. I've found I need very little to sample and the case I have is clear so I can easily see the reading. Good luck my friend!

My baster leaks wort back into the fermenter too but I make sure it is clean and sanitized before I use it and ignore the drips. Wurx4e :mug:
