So I decided to do some experimenting and use two growlers I had lying around so I wouldn't tie up a full carboy. It looks like it's about ready but now I'm wondering how to actually get the liquid out of the growler so I figured I'd bring the question to HBT.

So do you just use an autosiphon and pump a lot or is there a better way?

For my small experimental batches, I just decant: since it's a small batch that's going to get tasted soon....I don't worry about oxidation. If you're really concerned, they do make ity bity autosiphons (noticed James had such one when he showed his mini-mash setup on Basic Brewing).

On my most recent experimental batch, I used just a regular hose and racking cane that I had pre-filled with sanitized water. I put the growler next to the sink, and my target vessel in the sink itself. I just covered the hose end with my finger, put the racking cane into the growler, and then let my finger off the lower end until the water had been replaced by delicious beer. Then I briefly replaced my finger and put the end of the hose into my target vessel.

You could probably just use a hose with some sort of filtering media on the end (like a hop bag). As for a racking can, I would modify it to be shorter making it easier to work with.
