How to heat/ control temperature for glass carboy

Hey, i'm looking on experimenting with fermentation temperatures and the developement of yeast esters and i would need something to warm my carboy. I heard of heating belts but some told me the break easily. So any ideas on controlling fermentation temperature as precisely as possible?

I have a 12-gallon rope-handled tub that I put my 6.5-gallon carboy in, then I fill the tub up with enough water to get me up to the level of the wort in the fermenter. I then pop an aquarium thermostat (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003U82YEY/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20) on the side of the carboy and set the temp.

This setup works really well to keep a temp that's higher than ambient, but cooling is a tougher proposition. I'm lucky to have a basement that stays 58-65F year-round, so this setup should work really well for ales. I cold crash by putting multiple frozen water bottles into the tub and replacing them every 8-12 hours.

Can you control the temperature well (per say i want to raise the wort temperature by 1 degree/day) and can it warm up to the high 70s?

Yep. Most aquarium heaters have an adjustable dial. Of course you'd have to manually adjust the temp each day but it should handle your request. My heater, linked below, can reach low 90s. Check it out
