For those 50 amp panel builders. How much wire did you use of each gauge? I realize everyone's panels are different so I'm just trying to put together and average.

I went to Home Depot and got "more than enough", then went back three damn times for more.

Me too. I kept buying those 20' packs and the box kept eating them up. I think I ended up with four. Seems like a lot of wire, but it all fits...

...somehow.

I found this fella on eBay, you tell him how much of what color and type and he will send you a quote. Really nice to work with:

I went with Kal's recommendation, and then more than doubled it. It still came out better than Kal's wiring kit if you ask me. I have extra wire and am not paying for the terminals, zip ties and those sticky pads. I have all of those already from older projects and don't need to buy them from Kal, I just wanted the wire. Here is what I got and the prices:

THHN 10 STR BK 25FT $8.75
THHN 10 STR RD 15FT $5.25
THHN 10 STR GN 30FT $10.50
THHN 14 STR BK 80FT $9.60
THHN 14 STR RD 20FT $2.40
THHN 14 STR WH 40FT $4.80
THHN 6 STR BK 25FT $17.50
THHN 6 STR RD 15FT $10.50
THHN 6 STR GN 30FT $21.00

Send him a message and see what he can do for you.

Thanks for the input. Lowes is only a mile down the road from me but if I can get the bulk of the wire for a little less $ on-line I will.

For my 30a Panel I bought:

10awg THHN Green -50ft
10awg THHN Black -50ft
10awg THHN Red -50ft
14awg THHN Red -50ft
14awg THHN Black -50ft
14awg THHN White -50ft

2 Wire Thermostat Wire (By the same brand Cerrowire) - 50ft.

I used the thermostat wire for the signal voltages, like the 8v SSR Control and the Temperature Probes.

I didn't end up using the white wire at all for the 14awg stuff. I spent 100 dollars on my wire spools and I have quite a bit left over. It will get used in a number of other projects, so no big deal. I do recommend buying a nice racheting crimper though, for the crimp on spades. I picked up this guy from amazon for 19.00 and it worked awesome.

Just remember in this application 12awg THHN will carry 40 amps if you look at the NFC specs. You only need the 10awg and 6awg wire for your cables to and from your panel. In the control panel 12awg takes the place of 10awg and 10awg will take the place of the 6awg.

You learn something new everyday! Guess iI made a 50amp panel for my 30amp setup :p

probably about 100ft of 18awg THHN Red for hookup wire
12 ft of 12awg THHN black for the 240V RIMS element circuit
12 ft of 10awg THHN black for the 240V HLT element circuit
12 ft of 12/3 SOOW for element hook ups
2 ft of 6AWG THHN black for hook up between the GFCI and MCR Relay
One six foot stove cord - four wire 50 amp with plug installed.
