Add 10%. 1 oz. of pellets = 1.1 oz. of whole hops.

Yeh, there isn't much of a difference, 10% extra for leaf would cover it. I think of this as the float adjustment. Changes in % AA crop to crop are likely to swamp differences in utilization. In my current stock I have some 15% columbus leaf and some 12% columbus pellets. Knowing how pellets are made, my gut reaction keeps insisting pellets should have higher AA's per oz. than leaf, but most of the time they don't. I wonder if growers make pellets out of the low AA part of the crop?

you guys think 2 oz of 9% german northern brew whole leaf is too much for dry hopping??

call me stupid, but what is the main advantage for dry hopping? is this used more for aroma?

i'd say yeah, thats a little much for dry hopping, assuming its a 5 gallon batch. dry hopping is mainly for aroma, and northern brewer is a decent aroma hop, but it has a strong aroma and strong flavor as well, so i would use less, depending on how much aroma you want, which i suppose depends on what you are brewing.

its for the three hearted ale from northern brewer in my primary. it already has 4oz of centenniel hops in it(as i've said, i'm a hop head) i'm supposed to put another oz of centenniel hops pellets in the secondary, but i'm thinking the whole hops would be easier to clean out of the carboy than the pellets. plus, the whole are bigger than the pellets and i think id have less of it in the bottle than the pellets

The pellets will sink to the bottom of your secondary along with any other residuals in your beer. You'll only wind up with as many in your beer as you siphon up when bottling/kegging, which is to say minimal. If you go with leaf hops, they'll float and you shouldn't wind up with much if anything in your beer since they're whole leaves.

I think I'd probably go with around 0.5oz of either the first time around and make adjustments from there, or you could even do a combination.

I prefer whole hops for dry hopping. Can't prove it, but I think making pellets cuts the aroma oils. 1/2 oz. of NB is a good place to start.
