How much water did i just pour?

On your custom brew rigs, how are you determining the total volume of liquid in your kettle?

Iv'e re-plumbed my basement a touch so that I can pour water directly into my kettle, but I'm torn between doing the math and marking out gallons on the interior of my kettle and adding some type of flow gauge to my feed line.

How would i best go about marking the interior of my kettle?

Put a sight tube in your kettle. You'll know exactly how much you put in. (As accurate as the graduations you put on it)

I made a "dip-stick" with the gallons/quarts marked, but could definitely welcome a better way.

It depends on the material of your kettle. Aluminum? Pretty easy to scratch it. Take a china marker and mark up the inside as you pour measured half-gallons of water into it. Then empty the kettle and take a nail and scratch lines into the inside. Scratch some numbers too if you're feeling industrious. It's not going to look that pretty, but...eh.

It's a lot easier to make a "dip stick." Take a plastic spoon and take markings as you add water. Use that as your measurement device.

If you want to be awesome like me, then you'll invest in a sight glass.

I mark the outside with a sharpie. Certainly not that precise, but gives you a ballpark. Using a brewing software to calculate your water additions will help you nail down exactly how much wort you end up with at the end of the boil.
