I have a beer just about everyday, I'm sure my mom worries about me as my dad tends to drink a lot. I wouldn't consider myself an alchoholic I guess I've never understood Americans culture about alchohol it seems like if you drink moderately your an alchoholic.

I live in Wisconsin....if we don't have at least one a day, we are seen as odd.

About 3 per day for me is average

GM's just as uptight, but let me tell you. Best day ever at work was St. Patty's this year. Kuhnhenn put on a St. Patty's breakfast with 5 or 6 beers. Deeeelish.

It's good beer if you like strong and hoppy. Actually my Uncle's nephews own and run that place. It used to be their father's hardware store until a Home Depot went up a few miles away. The rest is history. I checked on rate a beer, their Raspberry Eisbock is in the top 10 in the world. Wild stuff.

I've got a friend who gets so flat out hammered he pees on random things in the middle of the night- a rocking chair, cd collection, in the closet, etc...

HE's the alky, not folks like us...:mug:

I keep my pee where it belongs- off the front porch.

I spent most of my early adult life in a bottle.
so yes.
I am an alcoholic.

Homebrewing actually helped me gain control over it.
The Gastric Bypass REALLY made me change habits and attitudes.

1 pint a night MAYBE. Sometimes none.

Not sober by a longshot... but in control.

Odds are that about one sixth of us have or will develop alcoholism, that being a progressively stronger compulsion to drink alcohol despite it causing adverse consequences in our lives. Kind of like developing diabetes, cancer, or any illness, you either develop it or you don't. It's hard to develop it if you don't drink alcohol at all. Otherwise, it happens to some despite their best intentions and efforts. You don't get to choose (unless you abstain, which most of us on this site don't). If alcohol consumption is getting you into health, legal, relationship, financial, or other kinds of problems, or if you can't stop once you start drinking, then you drew the short straw---sorry for you. If those things are true and you don't want to admit it, well, denial is not unique to alcoholism, but it sure is a pain in the ass to deal with to those picking up around you. If none of this applies to you, then invite your helpful relatives to go to an Al-Anon meeting where they will learn that getting in anyone's face about their drinking is a colossal waste of time. In other words, if they knew at all what they were talking about......

My mother is and her mother was an alcoholic, so I keep an eye on things. The definitions posted earlier were a good guide...I never need to drink, have trouble stopping, etc. I drink for flavor...very rarely am I even buzzed.

I normally have a pint or two a day (after work, with dinner or after), maybe 3 on the weekend. With my last round of bloodwork from the doctor, my liver enzymes (ALT/AST) were slightly above normal. So even a small amount of alcohol regularly has a physical impact. Not to say it's a big deal, but something to watch, even if you're not an alcoholic. I don't think anyone has ever even suggested that I'm an alcoholic, at least to my face.

I also think it's very possible to drink too much than what is good for you and not be an alcoholic.

What an interesting thread. I have been told over the years by several people that I was an alcoholic. I have been brewing for many years. I like drinking tasty beer. I'll drink what I consider a "good" beer 3-5 times a week. Usually, I'll drink a 6'er unless it's a big beer. When I'm drinking something from the tap, 3-4 pints. I like the taste and I like the mellow buzz. However, I'll drink tea or soda water vs. BMC. Worked for the same company for 25yrs. I would go several years at a time without missing a day for illness. I'm no more of a prick when I'm drinking than when I'm not. Don't get loud and unruly and piss where I am supposed to. However, I had to have a physical every year and after the age of 30, every Dr. told me I needed to cut down on my drinking. So, apparently, in the eyes of the medical community, I'm an alcoholic. When I feel like it is controlling my health or is detrimental to my family life, I'll stop cold, just like I did cigarettes. Or, I'll drink more, start smoking 2 packs a day again and race the devil into hell. - Dwain

Did you get labeled with the diagnosis of alcoholic? You describe consumption levels that would be considered "at risk", which gets you the advice you got. I suspect if you were thought to be alcoholic you would be told so plainly, and told to quit entirely. That's not what I'm hearing you describe. Look back at my post--does your drinking cause you health problems, legal problems, financial problems, etc? If so, and you keep drinking, then you've probably got the disease. Alcoholism is the compulsion to drink, much like compulsive gamblers will wager away their lives. It's a disease, not a lifestyle, anymore than leukemia is a lifestyle. Changes lives, to be sure, but not something a person can really control getting or not getting (aside from being a lifelong teatotaller). If that's not your story, expect to get the "take it easy" advice.

By the way, one or two drinks per day is considered a non-issue for males under 65, one per day for females. Above that is "at risk". Advice to go below those levels either requires special circumstances (other diseases, medication, etc) or prejudice, or ignorance. And yes, there are ignorant docs out there, just like any other job. No one can know everything, though I know some who like to act like it. There are also prejudiced ones.

Both sides of my parents families were heavy drinkers, so it's something I look out for. I always have to look at myself and my behavior because heavy drinking is so dominant in my genes. I feel I do a pretty good job of regulating myself, so if anyone has the nerve to tell me that I am an alcoholic, I will remind them that it is indeed possibly true. I will also tell them that they are fooking ugly on the inside, possibly retarded and have no business poking their nose into my affairs.

this... but the drinking comes more from my dad's side, and it's more like a family sacrament than alcoholism. ;)

What's it called when, if you don't drink, you get sick? but when you drink, you get well again?

cause that's not me......

wow does an 18 pack a night count? because thats what i average.
but i have two simple rules. No booze before 4pm on weekdays and no booze after 4am on weekends.

This post sums up the thread nicely.

I don't consider myself an alcoholic as long as I have the ability to wake up, be clean shaven, and get a good day's work done the next morning. I also adhere to the 5 PM rule.

Business is business, personal life is personal life.

I drink, its what i do for fun. I make a really good living, better than those around me. I work 12 hours a day 6or7 days a week. On my (few) days off i drink and brew all day. I mash in at 9am with a homebrew in hand. I drink no less than three, and no more than 10 on work nights. My doctor recently told me that my liver was the strongest organ in my body(SWMBO asks alot of questions at appts). I was even suprised because i declared war on my liver in 1987(Its not been pretty at times).

But fact is, i'm never late for work, love my family, own my home, 2 cars, and six figure(working mans) income. I'm retired military. I grew up drinking, living, amd working hard. Most people who have issues are just weak(Cant stay sober for work, drink and get violent, cant get up for work....etc....). To that i simply say...... *******!!!!

Grow up america, get out of my home and especialy my liquor cabinet. Clean your own houses youu flicktards!

By the way, tapped a new(2week) WIT tonight. On my sixth one. Prolly tap the ol' lady later and make it to work in time to make coffee before anyone else gets there.

Kiss my alcoholic hillbilly ass! Its better to burn out than to fade away!!!!!
