I got some inpiration from some other recipes and came up with this. Anything you guys would change? It will be pitched onto a yeast cake from a mild I need to bottle. I will also be dry hopping, and I was thinking a mix of cascade and williamette for that.

I'm not sure about the Grain Bill since I don't use many of the "Cara" type malts, but my impression is that, that is a lot of Caramel malts for an IPA. But I'm also not sure about the Kg to oz conversion, so maybe it's not as much as I think it is.

For Hops, I would personally just do a standard 60 minute bittering addition or FWH, but not both. You could put one of those Centennial addtions around the 10 minute mark for a little more Flavor/Aroma. 52 of your 65 IBU's are from bittering addtions, seems like a lot to me.

I guess it just depends on what type of IPA you are shooting for, English Vs American.

OK, so i realize that metric units might confuse some of you, so I converted it. Let me know what you think.

I'd be interested to hear more feedback on the hop schedule for this one. I'd probably bump up the 30 minute addition to 15gm/.5oz.

OK, so I will increased the 30 min addition and adjust the 60 min to keep the IBUs roughly equal. I'm not at home so I don't have access to beersmith right now.

What about the grain bill? Does it look good? I want some malt backbone, without overdoing it.

I can't say I have a lot of experiene with the caraxxxx's you are using, so it's hard for me to say. The only suggestion I would throw in there is a good .5-1lb of caramel 40 or 60 possibly in the place of something else, but that's just what I've had experience with.

From what I've read caramunich 1 is a sub for crystal 40 or 60 (depending on who you ask) and carared is a sub for crystal 20. Obviously it won't be exactly the same, but this is what I have on hand.

The carafoam is just there for head retention. It is supposed to have little effect on the flavour profile.

Nice, if that's the case then I'd say keep the grain bill, but maybe reduce the Carared to .25lbs or so (but that's just a subjective opinion). I'd say run with it and report back!

Thanks for the help. I'll hopefully be brewing this weekend unless something else comes up or the weather doesn't play nice.

I don't know much about cara malts, so I'll defer to others on that.

I would rethink the hopping. You have a boat load of hops at the beginning, at 60 minutes, and now 30 minutes.

I'd change that. IPAs need bitterness, definitely, but I like the full hops nose and flavor from 15 minute and later hops. I would skip a 30 minute addition altogether, and load it up at 15, 10, 5, 0 minutes. You've got 59 IBUs, coming from the 30 minute- FWH additions. That's going to be BITTER, with very little flavor or aroma hops.

I'd change it to something like this:
1.50 oz Centennial [8.00 %] (60 min) Hops 37.5 IBU
0.50 oz Centennial [8.00 %] (20 min) Hops 7.6 IBU
0.50 oz Williamette [4.80 %] (15 min) Hops 3.7 IBU
1.00 oz Cascade [5.40 %] (10 min) Hops 6.1 IBU
1.00 oz Cascade [5.40 %] (5 min) Hops 3.4 IBU
0.50 oz Williamette [4.80 %] (0 min) Hops -

I wouldn't add the Willamette at 15 minutes, unless you are using them at 0 minutes, or dryhopping or something with them. They'd be completely covered by the centennial/cascade combo. That's why I put another addition at 0 minutes.

Yooper, you may have missed my williamette (along with cascade) hop addition at 0 min. Either way, your hop schedule looks interesting. Thanks for the advice.

Cara* is roughly equal to caramel/crystal malt in its contributions in terms of sweetness and body. For that reason, I would never use more than 1lb of caramel/crystal/cara(pils is my favorite for sweetness withour carmely flavors). FWIW, I like .5lb crystal60 and .5lb carapils in about 1.080 and scale up/down accordingly.

Yooper beat me to my hop schedule comment. Someone here posted a nice graph that showed optimum times for bittering/flavor/aroma. The peaks were 60/20/1 accordingly if I remember correctly. It is probably in a sticky, but I have not seen it around in a while. Anyone remember that? The reason people keep recommending ditching the 30 minute addition is that you lose out on bittering, and you lose out on flavor. Save yourself some hops, instead of tossing an oz in at 30, add another .25 oz at 60 if you are going for more bittering, or another .25oz at 20 if you want more flavor.

Oh, and I wouldnt make an IPA without dry hopping it. Thats just wrong man.

More good advice. I will adjust and move the 30 min addition to 20 min. Thanks

Regarding the dry hopping... don't worry I will for sure do that. I mentioned in my first post that it will be a mix of cascade and williamette. I just didn't plug it into beersmith.

Here's my finalized recipe, I will be brewing tomorrow. I will also be dry hopping with a mix of cascade and williamette. I will report back with updates.
