Hi guys !

I'm planning on upgrading my brew kettle soon.

Right now, I'm an extract brewer and do full boil 5G batches in a 12G kettle.
I may, in the future, go all-grain, 10G and electric brew.

I have found this kettle :
http://www.ontariobeerkegs.com/16_G..._Brew_Kettle_p/brew-kettle-16gal-advanced.htm

My questions are :
- Is 16G fine for 10G full boil batches?
- Is the option of 6" thermometer valuable?
- Will I be able to use this Kettle in the future if I move to electric?
- What's about those inside port option? Are they worth it? I'm not sure to know what they may be used to.
- Any other suggestion are welcome!

I appreciate any help !!

Thanks

I actually have that kettle, got it over a year ago. It's a little tight but you can definitely do a 10 gallon batch in it. It is possible to mod it for electric if you want, its just a bit of work and some tools. I don't think the longer thermometer probe is worth much, same reading as the 2 inch one and a better chance of hitting it while stirring. Mine shipped with a bazooka screen but I don't feel like its that useful, its too coarse to filter most of what I want it to. The pickup tube is useful, as with nothing attached inside you will leave about 5 litres in the pot when you drain it. You can also use an elbow which will leave about 2 litres in, which is enough to get only clear wort if you get a decent whirlpool going and leave it for 15 minutes or so. I'm happy to answer any other questions if you have them

Hi !

Thanks for the comments.

I may go with the elbow, did you buy it by yourself or do they offer it?

And also, I know this kettle is thinner in comparison with other kettle. Did you have any scorching problem so far?

Regards

I have had no scorching problems at all on a propane burner. I had to buy the elbow separately but it was only a few bucks so I wasn't really worried about it

Any reason you're going with that one instead of the same pot with the welded fittings ($10 more)?

I'm planning on buying one as well but can't decide on what option to get (welded vs weldless)

I think 16 gallons is plenty for 10 gallon brews... even if you boil for hrs and start with 12 gallons that leaves a lot of extra headspace...It should be easy with that kind of head space to avoid boilovers. then again I brew with electric so boilovers arent a concern for me... I use a 15.5 gallon kettle for 11 gallon brews. (i used a 13 gallon kettle before that and that was kind of tight.)

I didn't actually notice you were looking at the version with weldless fittings. For the extra few bucks I would definitely go with the welded couplings, they are a lot more solid and the weld work is very well done on the one I have, totally smooth and shiny.

Excellent, thanks for the info :mug:
