Um....any thoughts on how to clean melted sleeping bag off my mash tun lower skirt? My friend said he had an old sleeping bag to wrap my mash tun in since it was 20 degrees in the garage. It was the first time I direct fire preheated the mash tun...oops. Turns out it was a cheap vinyl sleeping bag. So, how do I clean up my screw up? I thought about "borrowing" some methyl ethy ketone from work. Not sure if it will work.

Ok, now that I have picked myself up off the ground from laughing so hard!:D Thats a tough one... I would be tempted to just let it char itself the rest of the way.

Oh believe me, we had a good laugh about it. I knew I was screwed as soon as he threw it around the keg and I heard a sizzle...Yikes!

so, i asked the google gods 'removing melted vinyl from steel' and there reply was:

"You can remove plastic off of a cool iron if you freeze it off. To do this, place the affected part of the iron in a pan of ice cubes and a little water for 5 to 10 minutes. This will make it easy to scrape off with a spatula or other sharp-edged item. You may have to repeat this process a few times to be sure it is all removed."

Wow...never thought of going that rout. Sweet. Thanks!

if u have a can of break cleaner u can use that to freeze it off, just turn the can upside down, but be sure to wear gloves, cuz it gets friggin cold! im sure i pissed of an environmentalist with that idea, lmao. dry ice is also effective.

let me know how it works out for u

Yeah PHUCK the environment!

I would burn it off, environment be blowed.

light u burner and place u tun sideways on it.

And kill some environmentalists with the hot mash tun if u can.

You could also burn it off with a soldering torch...

Most of the air dusters will blow really cold if you invert them too. Just wear gloves (as already mentioned) since that can will get COLD... You could also try using a razor blade (like those used to clean stickers from glass) to scrape most of it off... A good wire brush (like for cleaning a gas grill grates) could help too...

Next time use fire resistant insulation close to the burner (on the kettle)... You could also build an insulated three sided box to go around the pot and burner to trap some of the heat during cold months. If you're good with power tools, you could even make a side box for the propane tank that pulls a little of the warmth from the main box to keep the gas flowing nice.

Just my $.05 worth...

Actually, we were not firing the keg with it wrapped. The lower skirt on the keg simply holds a tun of residual heat for a long time... I got most of it cleaned off during two movies with a knife and ice cubes.
