Hi all,

Please excuse me if someone has answered this before, I'm new to the forum and couldn't find anything after a brief search. I have a family friend growing an ornamental breed of hops, Summer Shandy (humulus sumner). The vine ended up producing quite a bit, and they told me to take as much as I want.

After some internet research, I found plenty of gardeners discussing the aesthetic side of the plant, but nothing on brewing. Has anyone ever used this particular variety before, and if so, what's the best way to use it? Thanks!

Ornamental hops typically aren't used for brewing. Pick one and open it up, does it have any yellow/orange inside? What does it smell like?

I haven't been to get them yet. I was wondering if it would be worth my time or not.

I would investigate them first before brewing with them. If they smell like hops you're used to for brewing why not give them a shot as a finishing hope in a simple ale? Maybe consider a 3gal batch. Remember that you'll need about 5X as much hops by weight than dried hops. Use them quickly after harvesting.

I'll definitely check them out before trying anything. I'll reply once I know one way or the other. Thanks for the advice!

Tried them yet? :p

Just came across this variety at a supplier, never heard of them before.
