I'm making a black ipa extract kit from AHS with an est. OG of 1.067 using wyeast 1056. This will be my first starter and I'm unclear as to how big it should be. I don't have any brewing software nor do I plan on buying any soon, so if someone has some help that would be great.

You will be fine with a one liter starter. I used a 1 liter on a beer with a 1.075ish OG with no issue. Personally I think the Mr. Malty calculations are a bit excessive for most beers, but then again it is really hard to over pitch (relatively).

Have to agree. I've made plenty of big beers with just the smack pack, though I agree that the starter is superior. The MrMalty calculations just told me I needed a 1.5 gallon starter for the Wee Heavy I'm about to brew. That's ludicrous.
